Hi cjra. I've not done a very good job of describing our intent have I! My boys are currently 9 & 11. Our intent is that the pool will be separately fenced and gated off. Not in any way connected to the house. NO ONE will have access without a parent. No one will be in the pool area without a parent also in the pool area. We will make sure based on laags comments re size that the patio directly around the pool is large enough to enjoy it when we are all swimming as I or my husband will always be there. We also want the pool separate from our primary entertainment spot which two pool designers thought was crazy. I use this area myself daily & we have neighbours over quite a bit. While the boys are young, we wanted to be able to entertain & still relax there knowing that the pool area is well locked up. I want to be able to get up, go in the house, walk around the yard, knowing that no-one can get to the pool. When the boys are much older (I'm talking late teens) we MAY have them in the pool while I am on the patio, I will wait & see their responsibility then. And that would not be if loads of friends are over as I know what happens when lots of kids are together. Having said that the pool will still not be out of sight. Except for a couple trees, the gardens between the kitchen patio and pool are largely low shrubs, very easy to see over & hear what is going on. Not to worry I am a very cautious sole when it comes to the boys. Our main thoughts were as I said, separately fence it to control access and not to incorporate our main entertainment area which is contrary to what a lot of people do. Hi, Sorry the picture is not terribly helpful. The leaves are opposite each other on the stems. The flowers are relatively small and white with five round petals. The flowers do seem to give off a fragrance, but I personally do not find it to be a very nice smell. I looked up both of your suggestions and I think it looks somewhat like Philadelphus virginalis, but it is hard to tell. I think I may move this shrub to a different location so I don't feel as compelled to prune the life out of it as it grows in front of the front door and windows. Thank you for your help! wynswrld98, I have a Philadelphus 'Manteau d'Hermine', I don't know how big it gets, the perfume is nice with a sort of slight pinneapple quality, but it is only lightly scented. robert1971, I also have a 'Belle Etoile', but the fragrance doesn't seem very strong compared to my Philadelphus mexicanus. I found this old document here According to this the Philadelphus coronarius is very strong, I have one, but it hasn't flowered yet so I don't know. My Philadelphus coronarius 'aurea' is very light on fragrance though. Maybe someone else will be know. Philadelphus 'Beauclerk' was another one that was not strongly scented. Philadelphus mexicanus is definitely the strongest perfumed Philadelphus I have had the pleasure of sniffing.
