how about i put it this way .. mock orange is one of the most gangly ..... unsightly ... flowering shrubs in the world ... just plain ugly .... and the ONLY REASON to have one.. is for its gloriously scented flowers... to plant one.. in a position where its flower output would decline.. would.. IN MY GARDEN .. make the ugly bush not worthwhile ... in fact.. i have a couple of no name monsters that i usually decide to kill every year.. though i never seem to get to that project .... again ... defining shade is impossible.. and you are left with just trying it... to define its vigor in that spot ... though i would not do so .. you go knock yourself out with it.. if it makes you happy.. DO IT ... you do understand that though various things are drought tolerant.. successful establishment will require a year or two of proper watering???? ask if you need further info in that regard ... ken

Olga, I definitely want to get some more of the early bloomers. Thanks to your earlier enabling, next on my list is Doorenbos Selection. Melissa, I agree with you regarding fragrance. I put in a hot tub in 2007 and am in the process of building a fragrant garden around it. I currently have a viburnum blooming, a lilac to follow, and daphne to join in somewhere. Yesterday, the company I work for had a team-event in a nearby town. It was supposed to be a treasure hunt with the first team reporting back with the secret word being declared the winners. My team and several other teams, were frantically searching in a park for the solution to our clue. Way across the park I spotted a huge viburnum blooming and I HAD to go get close enough to smell it. I had to make it look like I was trying to solve the clue even though I was really getting a flower fix. Well lo and behold, I found the secret scroll which was the object of our search. I covertly sent a signal to my team mates that I had been successful. I hated to leave that wonderful shrub, but off to the next destination we went. It was an old cemetery which I have never visited. I had high hopes that it would be filled with OGRs and maybe even some ancient daffodils. But with the exception of a few trees and some badly maintained boxwoods, there were nothing but stone markers. Carol, the rain beat my flowers up pretty badly yesterday, so no pictures yet.
