Arum Lilies/ Zantedeschias

Having fallen for those arum lily tubers on sale in Spring, loose in boxes - the ones with enticing names like "Mango" - I've failed with them completely. I put them in a very large container, loads of water, but no response, not even foliage. However, rooting around yesterday in the container, as you do, I discovered some very healthy looking roots and buds well below the surface of the soil.

Does anyone know when these plants are supposed to do their stuff? In Wales, arums appear quite early in the Spring, so why aren't they in action already? Has anyone bought & grown these tubers successfully?
