What type of clematis is best suited to a north facing wall? Any ideas?

Hi, I think Nelly Moser can be grown here, the shade won't fade its flowers I recall reading, but I am not an expert on these you understand! Also, we have a C. Cirrhosa 'Freckles' growing on North facing wall and it does great.

A number of Clematis potentially fit the bill, but...

- How big is the wall?
- Does it get any direct sun?
- When do you want the Clematis to flower?

Certainly snails and slugs will destroy clematis in our climate, especially this sodden year. They like to go for flowers buds and new growth. But you don't need the pellets that thick. A light sprinkle is sufficient and they ought to be under a piece of pot or something to keep pets off them. Your clematis actually looks OK to me. The leaves often get a bit manky in late summer. Unless you are wedded to perfection I would not bother with any chemical cures. Even if it has one of the fungal leaf spots it will likely survive and grow away fine next spring.

One I would like but haven't been able to get yet is Adrian James (seems to be available only in Oz so far). It has frilly petals and a humongous bloom season. I have no more room but I would make room if it ever became available. It's on COTW. I really want to get Sieboldi growing nicely but I foolishly bought it online and it's a pathetic specimen so I doubt it will even flower this year. Last but not least a tie between niobe and arabella I've got both but wouldn't want to be without them. One rare one I have got which I'd like to get going well is the small taiwanese bell shaped henryi (also on COTW). I'll try and do cuttings for people when I get it going strong.

Clematis montana often has a reddish tint to the foliage and a leaf shape rather distinct from that of most hybrids - that trifoliate pattern looks very similar. What time of year does it bloom and what do the flowers look like? Montanas are early bloomers (April) and the flowers look similar to Japanese anemones, which is the source of its common name of anemone clematis.

I have C cirrhosa, admittedly not Freckles but Wisley Cream, and find that it does not flower well in shade. Only the parts that are in the sun get blossom. Also, we'd better tell repmar that C cirrhosa is a winter flowerer.

Mind you, I am notably rubbish with clematis. The only ones of my 7 which are any good are a viticella called Sodertalje and good old montana Rubra.

FloraUK, yes, thanks for pointing that out, a most important point,....'C Cirrhosa' is indeed a winter flowering variety,...silly me!
