What type of clematis is best suited to a north facing wall? Any ideas?

Hi, I think Nelly Moser can be grown here, the shade won't fade its flowers I recall reading, but I am not an expert on these you understand! Also, we have a C. Cirrhosa 'Freckles' growing on North facing wall and it does great.

A number of Clematis potentially fit the bill, but...

- How big is the wall?
- Does it get any direct sun?
- When do you want the Clematis to flower?

greenclaws- Your Barbara Jackman is a real beauty! So healthy and prolific. Hopefully someday I will grow a clematis that will yield blooms like yours. By the way, if I had my choice of visiting anywhere in the world it would be the UK. I would love to visit the countryside and see the English gardens that I love so much. Do you have a website where I can view your gardens? Love the moniker, greenclaws. suebot in CT

Clematis Diseases

If you are asking if the same clematis varieties that are affected by diseases in the UK can be expected to have similar problems here, the answer is yes :-) However, I do not find clematis to be particularly disease-prone and I think you can avoid a lot of common issues merely by carefully preparing both the site and the plant before planting. Wilt, whatever one attributes the source to (and I'm not entirely convinced it is simply just a fungal problem), can often be outwitted by careful planting methods, is typically outgrown by the plants that are most susceptible to it and tends to be focused just with the large flowered hybrids (pruning group 2). Selecting pruning group 3 varieties will tend to lead to few, if any, issues with wilt, ditto pruning group 1 choices. I have never experienced any serious issues with PM, but that also tends to be a very climate-related issue and while cosmetically unappealling, generally causes no long term harm to the plant. And it is quite treatable. Other than that, I have never encountered any more serious diseases with clematis after growing dozens of different varieties for nearly 30 years.

What clematis do I have?

Having flowers present is virtually a requirement for any clematis ID since most commonly sold varieties are hybrids and the foliage is indistinguishable. The second is 'Miss Bateman'. Part shade - a few hours midday - is fine and in fact will allow the flowers to remain fresh and new looking longer, especially with Miss Bateman.

I have C cirrhosa, admittedly not Freckles but Wisley Cream, and find that it does not flower well in shade. Only the parts that are in the sun get blossom. Also, we'd better tell repmar that C cirrhosa is a winter flowerer.

Mind you, I am notably rubbish with clematis. The only ones of my 7 which are any good are a viticella called Sodertalje and good old montana Rubra.

Sorry for double post, had to abandon comp for a while & thought it hadn't posted first time.

FloraUK, yes, thanks for pointing that out, a most important point,....'C Cirrhosa' is indeed a winter flowering variety,...silly me!
