Gardening Scotland 2005

I attended 'Gardening Scotland' on Friday 3rd June. My overall impression was one of disappointment. There were a few outstandning displays but there were many very ordinary stalls. I would be interested to know what others thought, has the extra day at the Chelsea show made it too difficult for some growers to attend both events?

I have to say I agree with you melrt968, I went on Sunday and although I know the displays can be a bit tired on the final day, I was expecting some really great designs to inspire me. There were a couple of good ones that I thought were worth taking photos, but overall it was disappointing that it was not as good as those in the past have been.

I had promised 'no new plants' but we stayed til the end and the bargins were just too tempting. But, with Arisaema for Â£1 each there was no way to pass them up! Of course once his wallet was out it was easy to get more plants LOL

It will be awful if this is what the future displays are to be like. Maybe the organisers will actually take other shows into more consideration and arrange the dates accordingly. But then, maybe the designers will achieve a better show next year as, to be fair, this was the first year Chelsea had been extended so they did have a bit of a learning curve this year.

Well, that's just my 2p worth :o)

The cost of thoughts has increased! It used to be a penn'orth, but at 2p that is 5 penn'orth. Old McDonald.

Thanks Veilchen, I can't wait to grow corn. Until it turned considerably cold and windy, I would just stand in the new space and envision all that corn and maybe some melons. Snow is in the forecast for the next 3 days. It doesn't usually snow around here before late December or January. Funny story. Dh and I went into town the other day and I asked if he'd drive thru this older established neighborhood to see if we couldn't snag some leaves. Lo and behold we drove past a house where a couple was out bagging maple leaves. We stopped and I asked if I could have them. They glanced at each other as if to say..."what'd she say?" I spoke up and said I wanted them for my garden. A big smile came over their faces and as they explained how that would save them a trip across town to get rid of them. I got 12 large bags in all but had to make 2 trips. I need a bigger truck:)

I planted them early, but also set them out in the garden early. The ones that had to wait to be planted out never bloomed. I'd say, guessing, that I set them out about mid-April (15 - 21st?). Those set out early continued to bloom until late fall, although they became floppy. Some were over 5' tall when I stretched them up, but they were resting on their 'elbows' so the flowers were only about 3' off the ground. None of them had more than one flower stalk. Does anyone know if that's normal? I paid only 10Â¢ for the seeds, so maybe they were freaks. (?)

Great pictures, Kate! Thanks for sharing. I also checked out your garden album while there, and I loved your black racer photo. Beautiful creature!! The photo you have labeled salvia with a question mark is Agastache "Acapulco" though you might already have found this out and just not changed your caption yet.
