It sounds like the fish in question may have undigested food stuck in their digestive tracts. This can cause the swim bladder to swell on one side and cause the fish tip over. I would suggest you move the fish into a holding tank, that contains water from your pond. This is important, it is to ensure that the water is at the same temperature, so the fish will not be shocked by a water temperature difference. Slowly, [Do not rush this part] over an hour or so, add WARM water [NOT boiling water] to the holding tank, with the fish in it. Until the temperature of the water reaches 50°F to 55°F. This will help get the fish's digestive systems going again. Wait for a couple of hours and see if they void the impacted food. If they start to come around, try feeding them some frozen green peas, mushed up. The peas should have the skins removed, before mushing them. This again is very important. You don't want anything else stuck in the fish's gut. The mushed up peas act as a laxative and can help clear the obstruction in the fish's gut. If this works. let the fish rest for a day or so in the holding tank,then you can move them back out, into the pond. BUT FIRST, you must bring the holding tank's water temperature down again, to the same temperature, as that of the pond water, before you move the fish out. Do this by adding ice cubes, over a few hours. Do not rush these temperature changes. Please let us know how you get on with this. "Horton"

you probably have a few things going on. Since the koi lived long enough to get a nasty infection, we can pretty well rule out parasites such as costia and ich since those can kill pretty quickly. I suspect a parasite was still responsible, possibly flukes. Flukes are irritating and cause a break in the skin. The bite gets infected, causing an ulcer. The fish is now sick, and a fungus called saprolegnia starts growing on the ulcer. Saprolegnia releases toxins into the fish making him even sicker. SAP alone can be deadly. I realize it is too late for this one, but in the future here's how I would treat that fish. Catch the fish and sedate. Gently scrub the wound with a q-tip and betadine. Remove all traces of fungus or it will grow back. Be sure to keep betadine out of the gills!! Treat the sore with a paste made of potassium permanganate (dangerous stuff....handle with care), or malachite green. Seal the wound with denture powder. With an ifection as bad as that one, I would also treat with an injectible antibiotic such as amikacin. The fish needs to be returned to a clean QT and the temperature needs to be slowly brought up from the pond temp to around 70°. A koi cannot heal in cold water. Further investigate the possibility of flukes on other fish. Symptons include flashing, jumping, excessive slime coat.

The toads are only in your pond to breed, not to eat the fish. They do make a lot of noise and splash a lot, so it's possible the fish are intimidated by them especially since the pond is new to them, too. My guess is they're hiding, but soon the toads will be gone and you'll have a pond full of tadpoles.

Do you have any of the original pond water, make a sick tank out of the container you used to hold the fish while cleaning the pond. Make sure there is plenty of aeration and add pond salt to the water. Pond salt is average one cup to a thousand gallons. Hope this helps... Craig
