Seen the picture... very nice.

Ok... here's my contribution:

ÂoÂiÂi

(banana)

Nishi.......short for nushikigoi which means coloured fish!

actualy its a lemon ogon.

Kazzie, the thought of a banana floating in my pond reminds me of the neighbours from hell and their rubbish disposal unit...lol
Fofifi has a nice ring to it though. Might use that yet but still open to suggestions. Nice pictures on the other hand :op

Not being picky AJC, but she is actually a Chagoi. Ogon have only scales to the upper of the lateral line to my knowledge, whereas my nishikigoi is fully scaled. Like a common carp is, would like one of those too!!!

Nice name though, looking for something a little spitirual or from Japanese fokelore. Like a Warrior name or the like.

Any ideas.
Steve

Looks ogony to me, I have a very similar one but a bit bigger I think. How do you know it's a she? As for the name, just got back from the pub and can't think in a very japanese manner, sorry. lol

Steve,
Ogons are fully scaled, metallic koi of a single colour. Chagoi translates to brown fish and can be any shade from cream to chocolate brown, both metallic (gin rin) or non-metallic. Chagoi's are renown for being friendly and a calming influence on the other fish in the pond, also they grow very quickly and very big. I'm afraid I can't help with any Japanese mythological names. Is she Japanese or other origin? What size?
Chris.

Just calling it a she for now.... Was told she/he/it was a Chagoi upon purchase. God knows really, all I know is the beauty of the fish. Been pub too hence fact I`m still up and typing (and drinking!!!)

Just found a frog in my front room hopping around like mad.. placed him in stream area. picture to follow.

Here is a link that might be useful:

Size is 6"....(I usually lie there...lol, although it is bigger...roflmao!!)
Was writing other thread before wrote this one..

I was going to suggest Bubbles!
I'm afraid all I know about Japanese names is Pokemon which probably isn't much help!

Big fish in control of the pond, how about Koizumi :-)
That would suggest a male fish though.

Perhaps I should ask my wife, she is Japanese after all and probably knows what kind of names Japanese fish "should" have (apart from "sashimi" or "oishi-sou", hahaha)

Sushi?

We have a lovely Chagoi, my grandaughter who is 3, called her the "sky fish", mainly because she ccould not pronounce the 'chag' bit! Sky fish has stuck now.
We tend to name ours (the fish, not the grandchildren) as their characters become apparent. We have a very laid back lemon ogen who is called Jack (Lemon). (cringe) ! I believe Koi are refered to as water jewels in Japan, perhaps you could follow a jewel theme, what precious jewels are lemon? Citrine is the only one I can think of.

Nishikigoi is the waht the japanese call all koi, it simply means coloured fish all koi are therefor nishikigoi

I doubt very much if thats a chagoi, chagoi are all one colour as chris says, the colour does vary, from greenish, to mud brown, even to a light golden brown almost yellow, your fish has light petchal fins, they may even be white or metalic, chagoi may have clear or lighter outer lines around the fin tips, but the first part of them from the body is always the same colour as the fish, chagoi dont have mixed colourd fins, in all chagoi i have seen their body scales are clearly defined too, only change is a gin rin, witch is still all one base colour but with a few shining scales across its back, the scales on your fish are all the same and blend in with the body colour, which is the ogon classification.

I am inclied to stick to my opriginal call, I still think its a lemon ogon.

Koisumi Lemohchoi. A pond club name, a real pedigree...lol

Just a thought.. tell me yours

Steve

Steve,
How's your koi doing? Can you give us an update?
Chris.

Hi all,

Koi is growing rapidly and starting to get a sort of metallic shimmer to his scale pattern, although he is still very yellow in colour. He seems to have become acclimatised very quickly and is schooling with all my other fish, even though he dwarfs them all. Still not got him to feed from the surface but i`m sure that will come in time.

What things should be done for over wintering koi??

Steve

I don`t know if any of you remember that I introduced 1 Koi to my pond last year but didn`t actually know what variety of the species it was. Well I have now found out that the fish I named Chagoi (or Chuggy for short) is actually a Yamabuki. I also have a Goshiki and a ghost Kumonryu now. Done a lot more research on the varieties and am now certain. Sorry if I seemed petulent prior to this but I was informed by the vendor that I had received a Chagoi although it still is probably an Ogon he looks more like the pictures of Yamabuki that I have seen. He was wrong you were right....lol
The other two are definately as stated as I bought direct from spawn pool of specific variety.

Still not got the blighters to feed from the surface, any suggestions???

Please help

Steve

Hi Steve,
Do they feed from the bottom or not at all? I've got a couple of new fish in the Qtank and they won't come to the surface when I'm stood next to the tank, but come to the surface when they think I've gone. What temp is your pond? Too cold and they may not be keen to come to the surface. Your ghost kumonryu, is that a cross between a common carp and a kumonryu? It'll be interesting to see how that develops.
Chris.

Well getting koi to feed on the surface can take a long time, getting them to feed from the hand even longer.

What you need to do is sit by the pond in sight of the fish for as long as posible each day, so they are used to you being there, after they realise you wont net them again they will come up each time you visit.

Another quick way, is get a (proper chagoi) in the pond LOL you will see a difference in the koi behaviour in a day or so, they really do make a difference, but you need a chagoi of the same size or bigger, smaller ones dont always have the same effect.

But a breed called ochiba will have the same a effect, they are a cross between a chagoi and a soragoi, so you get a mix colours, which is from brownish green and blueish grey similer to kohacu pattens.

I don`t know what the ghost kumonryu is a cross breed with, it is very mettallic in places with almost an skull like marking on its head. It is a very beautiful fish though Chris.

AJC fish do feed from bottom and I have been using floating pellets to try and tempt them to the surface. They don`t seem to have any interest in them although when I come back an hour later or so the pellets have dissapeared, do they dissolve??. When i drop a few maggots into the pond it provokes a feeding frenzy with the koi usually winning. I have started to drop a few in every day just to get a feeling of security for the fish. Soaking maggots in water for a while makes them float also so I am going to try putting a few floaters in with the sinkers in an effort to get them to come to the surface. Do you think this is a good idea??

As for getting another Koi, I don`t think it would bee too fair on the other fish as yet, mainly because I dont want to overstock the pond.

You'll be building another pond soon! Koi grow so quickly and they seem to produce more waste than goldfish. My black box filter began to struggle when I got to three koi, and then I also realised the pond wasn't deep enough for them. They're so addictive! Since we built the 'only koi' pond, the koi feed from our hands. Another hobbiest claims it's because the other fish make them skittish, but when they're all koi together they're very calm. However I do have Soragoi, Benegoi and Chagoi... all large calming fish who may be leading the way.

Linda whats a Benegoi? never heard of that one.

koi do produce more waste than goldfish, but I dont think other fish make them "skittish" I put a few small koi (2.5") in with my goldfish to grow on a bit before putting in the koi pond, they even had the goldfish feeding from hand, there was a chagoi and ochiba in the bunch to tho, and those fish have a remerkable calming effect on all fish it seems.

Steve, that was my point, your koi will happily feed from the bottom with you there but from the top, they are not used to you being near the pond so they wont come up and feed till you leave, you need to stay there a for a while each day until they are used to seeing you there at feeding times, then eventually they will come up to greet you each time you go there, the only other way that doesnt take ages is to add a chagoi or ochiba etc, so if you dont have time to spend by your pond then it may take a long time before they feed on the top with you watching.

This is our Benegoi, Tiger Lily. She's a beauty. She is so friendly, sucks your fingers! She's filled out a bit since I last bowled her, she is slightly fuller bodied now. Mind you as with the other 'goi's' she is a greedy feeder.

well never heard of it Linda, to me its a gin rin ogon lol

is it one of the new clssifications? I am assuming the red/orange body is the benegoi bit, the gin rin is lust that so cant see what makes it benegoi.

I haven't got a clue regarding the classifications. She was listed as a Benegoi, never thought to question. Her breeder is Otsui, specializes in Gin rin. I did find this link on the web, http://www.geocities.com/koiphilippines/Varieties2.html
She is very similar to the soragoi and chagoi's, in eating and friendliness. I'll ask more when I go back to our dealer. I did buy another yesterday, shes in Q'teen till the 22nd May.

LOL I asked a dealer near here this morning, "got any benegoi" he said "got a what" LOL he hasnt heard of one either, and they have koi in form 5 diferent dealers in japan and the israli koi, but the fish looks like an ogon, but maybe its a gin rin aka muji with a new name.

And that link is the only link i can find any refference to a benegoi, I think they made it up lmao i did a search in the practicle fishkeeper page and the koi carp magazine search and that came up blank too.

I've seen Benigoi for sale, they are definitely a koi variety. Red koi in the same way chagoi are brown koi. Koi-polloi and Emperor koi have some for sale check their websites for photo's.
Chris.
