natural pond question
Comments (2)You want to remove brush/rock piles from around the pond-- snake hiding places. Keep the grass around the pond mowed as well. These may deter the snakes, but I'm not sure if there's a good way to stop them. Remember they are going to look for places that suit their needs-- ample shelter for hiding/shade as needed, ample food supply, and a suitable environment. Limit those and your pond may seem less appealing. My grandma lived on a lake in Arkansas that had water moccasins and copperheads. They pretty much left people alone and we swam/fished pretty regularly in that lake, though this was a large lake and area, not a small pond. Population density might be more of an issue in your case....See MoreWill Koi thrive in a large natural pond/lagoon?
Comments (10)Conjecture here: near the Chattahoochie you are in largemouth bass country? Bass rather like to eat goldfish and they can consume some rather remarkably large ones. My uncle had a farm pond, quarter acre perhaps, and he tried goldfish several times. Bass would somehow get into the pond and the goldfish would disappear....See MoreSoil identification (natural pond??)
Comments (3)You should consult a pond specialist. I don't know where you're located but some states have people in the state conservation or natural resource agency who offer free or cost-share assistance for pond building. Our state Conservation Dept. has guys who will come out and look at your property and do some analysis and design. But to answer your question, you may be able to work with the clay soil you have and not have to import clay for a liner. Depends on how clayey it is, and how much of it there is. There are places with clay over silt or sand layers, which is obviously a problem. If that happens they can stockpile the clay, remove the more permeable soils, and replace and compact the clay for the liner. If you need soil for a dam you have to make sure you have enough usable clay for that. One more thought: If that part of the property is in a federally recognized flood plain, you may need a state and/or federal permit to do any excavating if it would change the final grade. I don't know if you're digging down or building up or both for this pond, but check that out ahead of time so you don't have delays or worse....See MoreHELP I am a newbie, I need help with a natural pond, pump? filtration?
Comments (5)This will get you in the vicinity of how many gallons in your pond --> https://www.pondvolumecalculator.com/ The basic formula for calculating the volume in gallons of a pond or pool is to use the formula L x W X D x 7.5 where L is the Length in Feet, W is the Width and Feet and D is the Depth in feet. Most ponds are not perfect squares or circles so when you use the pond volume calculator you should make allowances for variations in depth and shape. Try to use averages when you enter the data and when your pond is irregular shaped with depth variations give up to 20% variation to what this calculator shows. What type fish? Probably going to need some type of filtration....See Morepaula2027
