An amusing thing happened at Borders

I forgot to tell you all about my Border's story. After my book club decided on which titles we would read for this year, my friend and I went to a sale at our local Border's store which was closing. (Everything was 40 percent off.)

Anyway, I heard the clerk talking to this man who had a piece of pink paper in his hand. He told the clerk that his wife was in a book group and he needed to find the titles on the list. After I purchased my cartload of books, I looked around for this man to see if I might sneak a peek at his wife's book club's list. I spotted him and approached to ask if I might see the list. The first title on the list was "The Reluctant Fundamentalist," which our group also planned to read. As I scanned the list further, I discovered that all the titles were the same as our list. I then asked the man the name of his wife, and was surprised to learn it was a member of my group. In fact, somewhat to my embarassement, I had met this man a couple of times in the past. (He didn't remember me either.)

Anyway, we had a good laugh about that.

Funny!

I wish I could be at a Borders closing but then again maybe not, I don't know if check book could handle it. :)

That's a BIG part of the problem, too, Scott (and I'm agreeing with Sandy, here)... FAR TOO MANY "unseen fathers." I know that even in this day and age there are still more men acting as primary breadwinners and women as primary caregivers in families, so it's often true that it IS the mom who is present when the child is acting out of control... However, there are also SO MANY ABSENT FATHERS... A man can "spread his seed" and leave. If the woman doesn't terminate what the two of them started, she ends up with a baby 9 months later, and if the two of them aren't married or at least living together, then we have another child with a single mother and no father or guiding male influence in his life. In some segments of society, this has become epidemic -- to the point, even, that Congress is now PAYING many people who have children together but aren't married to get married. Surprisingly, too, this idea didn't come from the liberals... it came from Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback, who is so conservative that, well... let's just say this is the first thing he's EVER done I'm aware of that didn't make me want to scream and throw stuff at the TV. There used to be so much STIGMA attached to "unwed mothers" that it was a major shame, and most girls or women who found themselves in that predicament moved to another town when it came time to have the child so nobody would know they were never married... That was maybe TOO MUCH STIGMA, but then things swang so far the other direction that it seemingly became almost a status symbol in parts of our culture for unwed girls to have a baby, and that's created an AWFUL LOT of our current social problems, or at least made many of them much worse. So I guess it's good that maybe things are swinging back the other way at least a little bit. I think any child should have two parents, if possible... for their sake, if not for the sake of the parents' mental health, as well. And when he CAN BE, Dad should be there to BE the parent, as well, not just some dude who brings home a paycheck.

I detest those kind of FB status updates . What they are really saying is, "Look at me! Look at me! I'm so cute and you're not important enough to know what I'm talking about!" Ok Jo, no talk like that. It's OK to weep, but never second guess what you could have done. Remember what I said about Seasons - "here for a reason and only for a season". Your situation is different now that he's not here. When he was here, the evironment was different. So many factors play into what we do and cannot do - even what we are willing to, or not to do. So you do what you can when you can, but it's not up to us when our time here is over. Your heart is still pretty heavy 'cause it hasn't been that long for you. So you are still going through all of those crazy mixed emotions. It's been almost 14 years for me with my daughter and everyday I still wonder whether I made the right choice to disconnect everything. But, I can't dwell on that because I will NEVER know if that was the right thing to do. I can't second guess that. I can't second guess about whether I was a good "mommy". I did the best I knew with the knowledge I had at the time. The same as you with your hubby. I'm not fussing - believe me. And, I don't mean to use this thread to stand on my soapbox about this. I just don't want you to ever second guess what you did or did not do. You did whatever you could at, and for the time. God knows your heart and that's what counts. If you couldn't do better, he knew that too and stepped in to help. So, don't be so hard on yourself - you didn't make the illness and you surely couln't make it go away. Just remember the good times, no matter how far away they seem. Keep your chin up - and now give me a smile... luv ya kid!! gng

Well, this is dropping and so it's time to take a moment and thank everyone for their feedback. I got a big kick out of everyone's comments. It's interesting to look at the photos through someone else's eyes (in a manner of speaking). I appreciate all the kind words and compliments. I can't wait to have our shelves in. Then the pendant and hood will both look better and less "stranded". I can also then get things put in their "right places" and get some additional color into the room with displays of my pottery collection (a growing thing). I really appreciate all the help BEFORE the big reveal. If I had been left to my own devices I would have had stools at the end of the stove run out in the way of the aisle. I would have missed out on soapstone. I would have never heard of NeverMT. I would have lower cabs instead of drawers and pull outs everywhere I could. I would have done uppers instead of open shelves. I never would have shopped around for cork flooring. I probably would not have heard of Schoolhouse Electric (this impacts my front and back porches and my carport as well). I would have never driven all the way across the state to get my Domsjo and Numerar from IKEA. I would not have ZONES. I would never have dared to sink my fridge in the wall so it was flush with the counters. I would undoubtedly have a 4x4 square backsplash (but I hear those are coming back "in"). :) I have learned a ton here. I have seen a lot of really cool ideas. I will have some more of them before I am done. I will have a charging station and a pet center in my back entry way if it kills me. This forum is filled with great people. While we don't ALWAYS get along, who does? I don't get along with my family all the time. I don't see eye to eye with my coworkers all the time. This community has been very helpful and welcoming. I would need a moving van and a home equity loan if the local Borders planned to close and marked everything down.

So is this a nation wide trend? Are all, or many, of the Borders stores closing? If so, I need to max out my credit cards and rent a U-haul it...... :-D

Borders are closing all their non-US stores except for two (London and Dubai from memory). We are waiting to hear who has bought the Australian ones. I don't know about the US stores, but do know that they have made a large loss in Australia over the last couple of years, apparently written off against the US operation.

I hope they don't close - I much prefer it to B/N, I like their reward program that I don't have to pay for, and think they have a better selection. But I've often wondered how long having two giants competing would last. We have 2 Borders and 3 B/N within a 15 mile radius.

I, for one, miss the book stores of old. I grew up in Springfield, MA and we had a wonderful shop in downtown Springfield named simply 'Johnson's Bookstore'. The shop was actually in two buildings with a small street or walkway seperating them. The front shop was all 'new' books on the first floor. The lower level held toys and office supplies, school supplies and such. The real pearl to me was in the second floor of the second building. The first floor held art supplies, the second floor held all the second hand and antiquated books. Ahhhh!!! Every friday for four years of high school I walked downtown from my school and haunted the aisles and shelves. Ten dollars went far and many times I secreted coveted volumes behind other books on higher or lower shelves. It smelled....old and..rich and I loved the old cases of Life Magazines and post cards from other lands and times. I would catch the last city bus home loaded with my 'treasures'. It was in operation for nearly 80 years, I believe. Somehow, nice as the new B&N's or Borders are, they just don't have the personality that I miss so much. Does anyone else out there come from Springfield MA and remember Johnson's fondly? Kresky's Drug store at Baystate West? The Silver Shell Restaurant on it's top floor? The Pretzel vendor in the Baystate Mezzanine? Kreskey's always had, on Friday's, fresh stacks of 45's from area juke boxes on sale. I bought myself silly. At 13 and 14 yrs. old, books and records ruled in the 70's.
