snail eggs

If I pond dip now I pull out thousands of snail eggs.

I think they are snail eggs, small round jellies in clumps. They are all over the place, I have seen snail eggs before but never as many. Has any one else noticed this explosion and is it harmful??

My snail eggs are usually stuck to the back of leaves or the edge of the pond, not loose in the water.

They aren't yellow are they? Like bubbly yellow globules floating about? (unlike common snail eggs which are clear sausages with specks, or ramshorn eggs which I understand are pink and flat).

Beware of yellow globules masquerading as snail eggs.....

Keep any eye on the eggs. I don't know how long you have had the snail, but the females can store sperm untill they want to lay eggs. Ramshorn snails can be very prolific. The golden snails that lay eggs above the waterline are apple snails. you do need to bring those into your aquarium in winter or they will die. If you take good care of them they can live for about two years. Applesnails reproduce by sexual reproduction, and can lay multiple clutches from one copulation. One could be fertle while another might not be. Once they hatch the babies are so tiny that you can barely see them, and if you have big fish in your pond they were probably eaten, before you even knew that they hatched. If you get more snails for your pond next year, when they lay eggs, wait for the clutch to harden ( about 4 days) then scoop them up. Roll the clutch up in a dry paper towel, place it in a ziplock bag with a damp paper towel that is rolled up in a dry one. (the eggs need humidity, but will drown if they get too wet)seal and float the bag on top of the water in your aquarium, after a few weeks of keeping an eye on it the babies should hatch. Keeping them in a breeder net is the best way to make sure that they don't get eaten. After about two weeks the babies should be about the size of a BB. It will probably be safe to let them browse around your aquarium. I hope this helps! Thought this might be usefull info since it seems like you want to be a snail mommy! Cameron, I had forgotten about your stream. I couldn't remember your blog name but I searched for your stream on Cottege Garden. Even more georgous than your other great seriously thought out designs. I pretty much just plant what I hope I can keep alive. The impatiens self seed and I spread them around a little. My biggest success or surprise was/is Verigated Sweet Flag. It is the spikey yellow-green grass like plant. It grows IN the stream but will perform in well watered soil. I got a pot at a garden/pond store. It has multiplied a hundered fold.

Snail eggs are opaque. Slugs eggs are translucent or clear.

Hey Nathan, I hope you're not offended. My husband said 'Watch, he'll be from Victoria!' and I said 'Oh he is!". All this after I posted the message, of course! I didn't know what VB stood for. Of course, being an aussie, you should be able to take some teasing. =) ; ) Ah, all in good humour. I ended up getting Coors light. Personally I didn't care which brand I used, because I don't drink beer (nasty stuff!). I don't think I've caught a single snail though! Perhaps I had fewer than I thought. Except that I've seen baby snails on the glass. Why aren't they going for it?!? Stupid snails. . .

Sorry to be so cryptic, I was in a hurry so didn't have time to find out the name of what it turned out to be from a previous thread. But that thread has now disappeared from e-space so I have to do this from memory.

Last year I had yellow fat-like globules in the pond which I thought were snail eggs (the aquatic centre told me they were), and eagerly awaited hatching. But they didn't and just got bigger, multiplied like mad, and no one was able to identify them on the website either. Finally I found a scientist up north who studies algae who asked me to send him a sample, which I did. It was a type of blue-green algae similar to the poisonous type that can make dogs ill, but not the poisonous type. He also made some suggestions about getting the plant ratios right. What I had to do was get rid of them (there was quite a lot by that time), and as it is was all over pond and in the pondweed, it was quite a job. By the way, that year there was no blanketweed!

Thankfully this year there has been no return of the dreaded yellow globules, not a huge amount of blanket weed (preferable to globules as the critters like it) and right on cue, the water has cleared in early July as predicted.

Size wise, the globules started out as little round balls that would elongate and double back on itself around an air bubble. It would be quite rigid and fat getting up to the size of a 2p (but round). When it dried though it would disappear into nothing.

If you manage to take a picture of them, I can tell you if they bear any resemblence to my nightmare 'The Attack of the Yellow Globules'.

YES, I KNOW THEY ARE UGLY HAVE KILLED MY WATER SOLDIERS & THREATENING MY LILIES, BUT WHAT THE HELL ARE THEY, WOTS THEIR NAME IS IT LINKED TO 'WAR OF THE WORLDS',,DO THEY KILL HUMANS ARE THEY MARTIAN POND CREATURES.AGGHHHHHHH...SPLAT...I cant be alone, does anyone else have these invaders, tell dont be embarrassed..share,,
