Vinnmarks......I think that’s a spin down filter....does it look something like this clear one? We had two of those and they barely worked (lots of sediment still came through) and it needed flushing all the time which is why my water guy recommended the Big Blues. Those toilet tank pics were when we had the spin down filters. I hate maintenance so the the less I have to fool with things the better :)

If you are a DIYer, make sure you can handle the installation yourself. Consult retailer websites (Home Depot, Best Buy) for owners' anecdotal reviews. These can point out product deficiencies in use or longevity that CR cannot determine. Compare prices among candidate products and resellers. Note that in CR ratings, there is frequently no relationship between products' performance and price. Don't get hung up on brands. Select a product. Order product, required parts, and installation (if not DIY).

From my experience this winter trying various spruce and fir: The smaller seeds are more likely to sink after 24 hours, and smaller seeds that float are less likely to germinate. Larger seeds are less likely to sink, but a significant portion of the floaters will germinate. I don't have hard numbers because I sowed many more floaters per cell (anticipating lower germination rates). I would say that bottom line: if you've got space, sow the floaters, especially if it's rare/valuable seed.

Agree with Suedonim75. A bit of elbow grease needed now to sand it back and go again. Even without the hole filler, the wood needs sanding anyway. To a lesser extent, the milling marks are showing with the inconsistent stain take-up as well.
