Turtle Power !

My parents were sitting in their garden yesterday afternoon when a terrapin (yes, a terrapin !) trotted up the path and climbed into their pond. After a few minutes of chilling, it climbed back out and beat a hasty retreat to the borders. My dad said it was four to five inches across the shell and had a green and yellow striped head. I know terrapins can get quite large when fed the right food as a friend of mine used to buy them when they were the size of a 50p piece, he then fed them on mussels loaded with vitamins and they grew to about eight inches across. The lake in the local park is a favourite 'dumping' ground for unwanted terrapins. You can see them basking in the sun on the islands in the summer. Enough rambling, if my dad's new addition to the pond gets comfortable, will it harm the fish ?

They will attack anything that moves when they are hungry, even fish, those jaws can leave a bad wound on a human finger let alone anything else, they are after all predatory and meat eaters.

What kind of turtle are we talking about? If it is a larger species like the common red-eared slider of the pet trade it could outgrow the enclosure in time. You could create an enclosure with a large water portion along with a few basking areas made from driftwood anchored using expanding foam. I have seen entire underwater reef systems made from foam so it should hold up well. Depending on the shape of the driftwood you could attach epiphytes like Bromeliads, Tillandsias, or Orchids as long as they are out of reach of the turtle. Turtles can be destructive and will trample plants. Any loose soil etc. will also get dragged into the water if you use it so it may be better to just go for the swamp look with driftwood/logs and skip land areas. Aquatic plants will most likely get uprooted but if the turtle is small and you have appropriate lighting you could try some sturdy ones and see what happens. Floating plants like duckweed would look really nice, as would some of the larger floating plants. I think the main issue would be the fact that the turtle would outgrow the enclosure unless you built it large from the start. Another concern is having a powerful filtration system to cope with the waste from the turtle. I think you could design a great enclosure for a turtle if you took a little time to think about the possible problems that could occur and how to avoid them. Try doing a Google search for "turtle tanks" and look at photos as well as articles to see if others have made similar enclosures. Most people keep turtles in simplistic enclosures but there is no reason why you can't make yours a little habitat of its own. Here is a link that might be useful: Turtle tank filtration

best way to move a snapping turtle?

Don't give them something to bite - they have such a high psi with their 'Chomp!' that they can actually shatter their jaw if they snap something too stout. I used to keep a rubbermaid tote in the truck to catch them in. I have picked them up by the tail in an emergency but I think this does carry a risk of injury to the turtle. As for determining the sex, male turtles have their sex organs in the tail so they have a larger, thicker tail and females a much smaller one. Sliders - males usually have long claws on the front feet - they 'flirt' with the ladies by waving their long nails in front of them! If you have to relocate a turtle, try to keep it in the same vicinity to avoid spreading any possible diseases. Box Turtles, according to studies I have read, do not relocate well; they will try to return to their former range. Sometimes I have to relocate one anyway because I find them on sites that are about to be developed.

I found the tax shelter in this posting when searching for a gift for my brother. He is a tax preparer and has everything. So I just had to share what I did for him. I took one of those woodcraft houses from Walmart- removed the two screws from the base. I cut a 1" block of wood that fit into the bottom of the house. I glued this block onto the base thus allowing the top of the house to be easily lifted off the base. I cut a 1/2" groove in the center of the block with the table saw so I could set a card of thumb tacks into it. This was hidden in the house until the top was lifted off. I wrote a poem for this & read it to him while my daughter did a Vanna White presentation of the house. Everyone got a good laugh out of this and I finally did a complete craft project! It's been a while. Hope you have as much fun with this as we did. Here's the poem: I drew your name for Christmas It's an honor, don't you know To get my brothers name for Christmas Ah! ashopping I will go. But then I started frettin After searching high and low Whatever will I get 'im (Twas wrong to worry so!) I went into an office shop Maybe something for your desk? I talked to the clerk a lot She tried to aid me in my quest. He could use a tax shelter Is what the lady said It seemed a bit off-kelter But there was nothing left instead. So here's your little shelter All painted so very nice The foundation has been mended The roofs' been polished thrice. The flowers are all blooming In the big pot by the door The bumblebees are buzzing And there's no sawdust on the floor. It seems to be the perfect place I do agree she's right It sure beats a plain old case And your tacks! They're finally safe at night!

Oh yes, Archie, Veronica and Jughead--my favorite comic books. I'd ride my bicycle to Madings Drug Store for a real chocolate ice cream soda--you know the kind with seltzer water and chocolate syrup and ice cream, real whipped cream and a cherry. I remember learning cursive and using a Schaeffer pen that you would put into the ink bottle. You drew the ink in using a lever on the pen. How about felt poodle skirts and lots of crinolines? How about bubble shoes and pony tails with scarves tied around them and jeans with the legs rolled up and Dads white shirt? How about guys with duck tails and cigarette packs rolled up in the T-shirt sleeves? How about really ugly one piece gym suits? How about learning to drive a stick shift? I remember Our Miss Brooks, American Bandstand, and The Lone Ranger. How about Ida Lupino and her swirling dresses? Give me some time; I'm sure I'll remember more.

Wow, goes to show nature finds a way! While procrastinating before having to write another report, I found the website below which may be helpful. It also includes rescue information.

Love to hear more about it if he sticks around.

Hi,

I have to agree about the 'eats anything' bit, they can get enormous and even when small will eat anything. Attacking ducks and depleting a pond full of ducklings are one of the more newsworthy antics they get up to. Don't hold out much hope for fish survival if it does get comfortable!!!

Cheers,

hi
all.
i have two turtles.
1 is a map turtle he is 12 inches from head to tail and the other 1 is 17 head to tail.

the larger of the 2 is a red eared it feeds on worms, maggots ,and some veg aswell as fish pellets.
they have there own pond and compound where all there needs are catered 4.

this pond has a 3 feet deep end under a leadge where they can get the best protection in the winter.
there have two beaches so they can climb out with ease.

most days they will be out barskin in the sun.

the map turtle was in my pond up to feb of the year but and it wasn,t intrested in my fish but the red eared chased the fish all over the place so beware the beaks on them r powerful.

also u must be very careful handerling them because the r carryies of salmonella.

i fish in the local area and there r many lakes and pond where they can be seen, where they get to big for there owners but this act of putting turtles in our waters is illegal.

if the pond is deep they will survive but the bigger they get the more damage they can cause to the fish stocks.

most don,t survive due to them being cold blooded but due to the mild winters we have now more+more live to grow good sizes.
