Hi Silvia, you're SO lucky your Lychee tree survived! What a beautiful tree! I lost (2) lychee trees 2 years ago from the freeze and I live 2 hours south of Orlando (Highlands County). I am however Very stubborn and giving it one more try :o) LOVE that picture...Amazing fruits and vegies, wish you were my neighbor,lol... I planted another one last year in Feb. and it survived the 3 freezes we had this winter. This is 'Mauritius' variety...it was the only one they had left when I was looking for one. Mine didn't bloom this year so I decided to tip prune it and is putting out new growths now. Silvia is right and its best to protect it from wind for at least the first year or two till the plant gets established. The young tender new leaves are very sensitive to wind. I have been in the Jax area growing tropical fruit. You can just put up one of those cheap metal framed 10 x20 ft carport that comes with the plastic white top, in a box from H Depot etc. and secure it to the ground with long anchors. Lowes, H Depot etc sells some really long ones or you could just put some 5 gal buckets halfway into the ground, fill them w cement then anchor the 'legs' of the carport that way or some variation etc. I get those big rolls of painter's plastic from Home Depot that are 6mil. 100ftx20 ft roll. You are gonna cut your pieces as needed for length and fold it so it is now a 12 mil. thick and 10ft high. You can then wrap your carport with it for winter. We usually cut a separate part for a 'door' in the front so we can water. I only use a propane heater if its gonna go below freezing. On hot days, you may need to leave the front door rolled up to vent it. I've been doing it this way for 14 yrs and it works fine in zone 9a. Our new farm is in zone 8b so I will have more colder nights where I may have to run heat so I may build a permanent gh there.

I ate a lychee flavored grape too! It was a green grape that wasn't very crunchy, so it tasted like lychee to me even more. The shape was almost an exact sphere, and it wasn't the biggest grape in the world, too. We bought it at Walmart and the company was Pretty Lady.

Seven years later and came across this post. Its been so difficult to navigate Houzz to find the garden forum but I stumbled across this when researching lychees. My Lychee has been planted outside in the ground for over 3 years now and is still quite small (maybe 3 inch trunk diameter) and only about 6 feet tall. It produces flower spikes now and again but not many and they never have turned into fruit. I definitely made a mistake in choice of location. Its between two trees which now tower above it so it lacks direct sunlight and warmth. However its leaves are pretty and I do not want to dig it up just yet. Although I'm seriously thinking about it. Maybe place it in a large container on moveable plant caddy so it can be placed in direct sun. Hope everyone else plants are doing well. Is there another gardening forum that anyone uses other than Houzz? Its just so hard for me to find the Gardening 'Forums", they seem hidden or buried and I spent 20 minutes trying to figure out how to navigate to some kind of plant discussions here.
