Books about Afghanistan

In recent years, interest in Afghanistan and its culture has risen sharply in western countries (for obvious reasons). I have read three books about Afghanistan, and I'm wondering if others have also. Here's what I've read:

Caravans by James Michener

The description of Afghanistan in this novel, which was written in 1963 and set in 1946, has a timeless quality about it. To me, it seems a good window into Afghan culture. (Of course, one assumes a high degree of accuracy when reading Michener.)

The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini

This novel was discussed at length here at RP, which prompted my reading of it. I consider it one of the best novels I've read in the past five years.

The Places in Between by Rory Stewart

I found this memoir of a Scot who walked across Afghanistan (Herat to Kabul) to be informational, yet not all that interesting. I suppose that's because his days of walking and his encounters with Afghans were very repetitive. I had to make myself finish it.
