Sorry I don't know much about Italian Cyprus but I think if you have mg seeds I'd try those first since they are inexpensive and bloom all summer once they get going! The clematis is only a spring bloomer ( that variety ). It may take longer to cover as well . Good luck either way ! :)

Rae, I have at least a half dozen straight species type seeds and I can tell you they do not vary much. All clematis seed gets a hard head if viable. They all look relatively the same. Some have a lighter colored edge to the seed, but it is still hard. The only clematis I know that have small viable seed are the non-climbing types like C. stans, but of course the good seed are still hard. On the link below, is a pic of a Clematis montana seedhead. I would just go with Rubens. It is a tried and true selection that has been around for ages and is usually easy to find. Or if you can find it, C. montana var. rubens 'Pink Perfection'. The leaves do not show that bronzy red coloring all season....that tends to be present only with early growth in spring and maybe to some extent in fall. And be sure to allow plenty of room for this vine to grow and a decent support structure.....it gets BIG and is listed with the "no prune" grouping (of course you can but need to do so immediately after the bloom cycle). Yes, my research indicated 'Wilsonii' blooms a couple of weeks later than the pink C. montanas. Which is right about now. Also pictures of 'Wilsonii' show pointed flower petals like my vine, plus pale chartreuse center stamens. Also mention of a 'chocolate' scent. My vine hits all those high notes, which is why I think it might be 'Wilsonii'. It isn't C. grandiflora because those flowers have rounded petal ends. Quite different to the pointed ends shown above. I'm going to post a couple more pictures as to what the vine looks like. You guys have been great with your suggestions! You've already convinced me that perhaps cutting things off at the base is not a good idea. But check out these pictures and tell me what you think. These two pictures show the birds nest of non green vines, as of today. This is the base. Also extends behind the tree stump. Very close to bamboo as shown.Again, back part all tangled vines. No way can this be pruned that I can envision. Front part has the green and flowers. It extends to a trellis on left. Here's a wide view of C. montana with another clematis also flowering as of today.
