Clematis Montana

Hi, last year I planted a clematis montana in a pot with jasmine and a passionflower to climb up the front of my house - big mistake! I now realise I overcrowded the pot because I think the clematis has died.The stems are bare and is all woody, showing no sign of springing back to life. If I cut it down and leave the roots in the pot will it harm the passionflower and the jasmine? Any advice very welcome please?

I don't think it will matter if you leave the roots in. Better that than disturbing the other two. That was three potentially mighty plants you put in there - there had to be a loser somewhere along the way. I reckon it was dryness at the roots that did for it, rather than overcrowding.

Overcrowding a tub or pot can cause problems such as nutrient deficiency and water deficiency as the plants fight to get their fair share.
Also, you can encourage fungal infections to proliferate as their can be insufficent air movement.
The clematis may have succumbed to a disorder called clematis wilt.
And no, leaving the roots in will not effect the others. Hope this is of some help.

Sorry I don't know much about Italian Cyprus but I think if you have mg seeds I'd try those first since they are inexpensive and bloom all summer once they get going! The clematis is only a spring bloomer ( that variety ). It may take longer to cover as well . Good luck either way ! :)

20 years ago I planted a clematis I swear was called "Montana Montana" It has grown about 30-40 ft up a neighbors pine tree and taken over the vertical 4x8 trellis. It is very hardy and is Growing in Alpine, Ut. It faces south and the trellis is on the south side of a row of pines and a fence. It is an evergreen. The blossoms are very fragrant and why I bought it. Smells like vanilla.

Like bonzgirl, I too would like to see pictures of a clematis montana in the winter. I just ordered a var. wilsonii and was thinking of planting on a north/west brick wall in the front of my house. But not sure how it will look after the leaves fall. Considered an evergreen clematis (armandii) but I think the sun would be too strong (especially on a brick wall) during hot summers we have here in southern Virginia, zone 7a. If anybody has pics or could give advice on evergreen flowering vine for my zone, please post. Need something that is not invasive and looks good on red brick.

Some forms may be a bit tender, as was seen with dying back after a recent winter. Otherwise, I agree about the slug protection - while more common types of anemone clematis don't seem to have a particular problem, I have found slugs to be murder at least once when trying to grow a less usual cultivar of this species. I chose it for having assertively fragrant flowers, wonder if there is a connection between that trait and slug susceptibility - like the genetic link between pink bract color, leaf spot and twig blight of Kousa dogwood.
