Cordyline Australis plantlet

Hi

I have just unwrapped my Cordyline Australis after the frosts and have discovered a small plantlet growing in the soil at the base of the stem. Is it safe for me to dig this out and repot it?

Are you sure this is a plantlet? It's more likely to be a sucker from the base, without roots. I would dig around a bit to be sure before attempting to detach it. Cordylines are not that easy to propagate from cuttings, but they are easy to grow from seed. I bought a packet about five years ago (v. cheap) and raised forty+ plants. I gave half away to friends, the rest I have made a mass planting with. I think they will make a very interesting feature in years to come. Plants are now about three feet high and broad, with short trunks showing already. They have all come through this last winter unprotected, even here at 1000' above sea level.

I have had them outside in pots for several years now. By the end of the winter, the leaves have all turned brown and most will pull away from the crown easily. The first year or two, this led me to believe they were dead, but being slow to replant pots in the spring, I have been pleasantly surprised to see that they came back. I have even divided them once. I know they are marginal, and even more so for you, but, as I said, they can surprise you. If I were you, I would leave them alone until it really warms up. Who knows? Maybe you've gotten lucky.

Don't have 'Woodlanders Red', but do grow 'Woodlanders Hardy', also a red flowering one. Has survived in near 0Â°F temperatures and remained evergreen. I moved it this past spring, to a full sun area to promote better flower production. Will see if that works! Don't grow Cordyline 'Red Star', but a number of gardeners in my Zone do. It is promoted as hardy to 5Â°F and to remain evergreen, if located in a sheltered, SW location. The location that I would like to plant a few, is in my "Arctic" microclimate zone and I'm sure they wouldn't survive there! The only suitable location that I have, is presently occupied with a large colony of Georgia Asters and those are maintained for a local hive of European Honeybees, which descend upon them in hordes during the fall! I couldn't think of disturbing those.

I have grown two pots of Red Sensation for ten years now. I keep them outdoors year round in my southern climate. They have made several pups over time. Some springs, I divide one and use the pups in other pots, the ground, or as gifts, etc. One pot I am allowing to grow into a multi stemmed plant. It is a very simple job to divide them and I have never had anything but success. I wouldn't say they are the most prolific plant I ever saw, but they do seem to produce pups fairly regularly.

Sammy... I have to agree with others here.... whether you have Cordyline 'Red Star' or Dracena, neither will be hardy for you in zone 7.... Dracena would need a minimum of zero Celsius, never mind zero Fahrenheit.... it would be long since dead before getting anywhere near that... Cordyline's are hardier but even they need a minimum of zone 8 and would be cut to the ground/probably killed below 15 F... ...I've grown 'Red Star'....'Sundance'... and 'Purple Tower'... all Cordylines, and RS is the nicest of these I thought. They can survive for many years over here in zone 8/9 and reach upwards of 10 foot or more... ..true Dracena's are house plants even over here in zone 8.... in the States they would need zone 10 minimum to grow outside...I would think... ...if it was me, I would take them back to Lowe's and ask for a refund, as you weren't aware they wouldn't be hardy in your area...

I grow cordylines from seed every year and have got primary school age children to grow them in the school greenhouse. I buy seed from Plant World Seeds in Devon which have always been reasonably priced and viable. Sow in spring in a multi-purpose compost, keep well watered and wait and see what happens, you will be surprised! This is only for the plain green versions though, I think the coloured leaf versions are vegetatively propagated but someone may tell me the seed is available!
