Before I move to Seattle, I lived in North Atl. suburb(N.Fulton) and grew garlic 3 seasons. The last season I had over 100 plants. Believe it or not, I planted store bought (Asiatic Artichoke ). And I got pretty good results too. I bought some hardnecks fro Kroger, some sofnecks from Asian Markets.. I am sure , if you find a local grower, and buy seeds from him, that'll even better. Anyway, I used to plant early to mid October.

Yours looks like bolting michili chinese cabbage. Best to pick the young flower stalks and eat them, cuz you will not get heads from these plants now. This happened to me last year. Michili cabbage, in fact most chinese cabbages do not seem to like being moved/transplanted. Also, they get picky about when they are planted, bolting as soon as the weather gets too hot. I've done much better with bok choi, but intend to try again with michili this spring.

How dwarf is dwarf? Most peaches are rather small trees - somewhere in the 10-15' range with maturity. 'Frost' and Oregon Curl Free' are rated highly for this area as they do not require a lot of heat to produce good crops and both tend to be very disease resistant. The true dwarfs - selections like 'Bonanza', 'Honey Babe' and 'Pix Zee' (5-6') - are grown more as ornamentals here. Unlikely to develop good crops and subject to the typical peach disease issues. Lovely floral display, however.

We have two ~50 foot rows of grapes at the back of our property. We started out with muscadines which are native and can be found in the nearby woods. I think the varieties we got were Cowart, Noble and Scuppernong (a golden variety). We put them in about 5 years ago and they do very well with the heat and humidity and are delicious. Muscadines are different from European table grapes in that you don't eat the skin and they taste a little different (better IMO). Two years ago, my dad went over to a winery in Santa Fe (TX) during the fall pruning and got tons of clippings from their vineyard. They grow Blanc du Bois and Spansh Black European wine grapes. We sprouted them in the spring and last year we put them in the ground and set up another line of trellises. So far they have done very well and looked very healthy over the summer without too much disease. Those varieties are supposed to do OK on the Gulf Coast. I really want to try this one variety which is a hybrid between the muscadine and European table grape called "Southern Home" . I'd grow it just for the foliage which looks amazing! What were you planning on using your grapes for? My dad makes muscadine wine, which is OK tasting, but I think they're just fine out-of-hand.
