Here is what I did... I was mad because I didn't know they had a nest there and got 8 stings... Woo.. Nasty. It hurt. Normally I would have poured some gas in their hole but didn't want to waste any gas so I waited until after dark. Boiled a large canning kettle of water. Took that out and poured it on that area. Next day I saw a few flying around their hole and did a rerun that night. That killed them off. They are evil and I wouldn't wait for anything except that evening and do them in.

That is not a honey bee. It looks like a bee in the megachilid family (leaf cutting and mason bee family). They are solitary and dont live in hives, though they can nest in aggregation in wood cavities. They ( and bees in general) are docile and will not sting unless you try to touch them. Really. I cannot stress enough that there is no need to remove bees from children's environments. There actually are stingless honeybee species in central and south america.this is not one of those.

If they are very large, they are Cicada Killer wasps, another solitary soil dweller. I would not call these 'completely harmless '. The females of these and other such insect species will defend what they consider their personal little territory. The Cicada Killer, though loath to sting, will do so when feeling threatened. As you can imagine, a critter so large must pack a powerful weapon. I stepped on one by accident a few years ago, while in my bare feet in the backyard. I expect that my scream can still be heard ricocheting around the tree tops. So, not completely harmless but don't go around tromping on one and you won't have any problems.

The choice is to leave them alone or to kill them. They will not be discouraged. They do not negotiate. When fully dark they will be as much at rest as they get, one of the long distance aerosol sprays marked for such insects will kill them. Aim at the nest opening in the bottom. Be close enough for good blast when you start. As you spray, move in closer as the pressure of the spray drops. For European hornets, I use one of the electric bug zappers for a few days to reduce their numbers. They will fly into the zapper all night long. Clean out the zapper each day.
