I love all those old cookbooks. I've got one from my grandmother from Penrith WI c. 1915. it's all stained and dogeared! No idea abut the scroggin, however, have you tried googling it?

I Googled it and the answer seems to be a mixture of fruit and nuts, although I seem to recall my grandfather refering to a certain type of apples as Scroggin.

I would go along with DeeDs - I seem to remember Scroggins are apples of some sort. Don't ask me what sort, though!

At this end scroggin is a mix of nuts, fruit, chocolate bits (optional) that trampers take into the hills to munch on in the boring bits between scenery.

Well, thanks for your mails; the Yahoo & Ask Jeeves searches I did yielded up the same results, a chocolate and fruit based bar, originating (with that name anyway) in Australia.

Interesting about the apple possibility . . . maybe one of the apple conservation groups might have "scroggin" in their databases, it's certainly the case that there are some lovely funny old apple names out there!
