Frogs, toads & newts - photos

I played with my little digital camera (Xmas present) by the pond on the weekend, and found that its zoom function is so neat that more detail is visible on the photo than in reality!

My babies - there are hundreds of them, getting fatter every day. Toad tadpoles. You can even see their eyes in this shot!

ha ha ha,,,,,very funny,,,in the rain last night a frog kept jumping into the patio doors trying to get in!
it obviously wanted to watch smallville too ;-)

I was under the impression that frogs/toads are insect eaters. Any chance that your friend's buds are collateral damage? I have loads of toads in the yard and the greenhouse is occupied by frogs, and I've never lost anything other than bugs to them. Can't wait to see the photos and fing out more...a mystery for sure. Perhaps she can capture and humanely relocate it to a better environment. Kristi

Very nice pixs of frogs n' toads, earlybird! I love our native amphibs here. Oh, and I have a frog story to share.... I had one of those hideous Cuban frogs get into my bedroom one night about two weeks ago. There was a small gap in the screen frame (fixed now) and he somehow squeezed in. I was woken to the sound of a thud on my wall, another thud on the second wall, and then "SPLAT!!!" the little !#$*!!! jumped to the ceiling, missed, and landed on ME. I shall not share the location of the landing zone. *G* This was about one in the morning. I was NOT amused. At all. My cats were going nuts, but I managed to grab the pasty white ghost frog, go out into the back yard barefooted, whereby I almost immediately stepped in dog poop. I flung the hideous thing like a major league outfielder and it landed in the middle of the lake. I hope the fish pecked at him for a really lonnnnnggggg time. Oh I do hate those evil things. When I was down south working for the vet in Jensen Beach we used to tell people to put them (both Cuban and Bufo) in a freezer bag and freeze them to death, so that might be an option for the more squeamish.

Oh gee, bogturtle .... such a loss to change the name to Pickerel in my online gallery. :-) Oh well ... I especially want to have the correct names on things. I will now search my blog to see what I can update there. Probably did a post on it. Danetherton, I try not to pick up frogs and toads because of the thinness of their skin and organisms that might be on my hands. It's very hard not to but I succeed except for the occasional baby tree frog which I will put my hand up to allowing it to walk on it. My natural tendency would be to hug everything I see. I give the bees a back rub while they feed on our flowers and so far they all love it. I know they can sense fear and react to it, so that's the key. I'm in the Piedmont actually. Mountains are 45 minutes away. Bogturtle ... biology wasn't my subject when I was in high school. We had a teacher that walked around with a huge snake on his neck. Growing up in the city I was terrified of snakes and also bugs which I got from my mom screaming every time a moth flew around or a bug crawled by. Fortunately I got gradually delivered of both fears when we moved to the woods 23 years ago. Now I love all of God's Creation and it so fascinates me. I was a good student but 3rd grading period we had to do a bug collection and I was petrified and told the teacher and he told me if I didn't do it I'd fail that period. So, I failed it because there was no way ... parents understood but it left a bad taste in my mouth for biology for a long time. LOL Thank you both for the confirmation.

Any moving water- fountain or fall? NO Any filter? NO Edges, Rocks or logs around? ROCKS WITH SPACES UNDERNEATH AROUND THE POND, LARGE WOODPILE COVERED IN IVY ABOUT 3 FEET AWAY FROM THE POND Type of weed, STARWORT, AND THAT REALLY COMMON BORING OXYGENATOR WHOSE NAME ESCAPES ME RIGHT NOW... How much sun, ONLY ABOUT 6 HOURS IN WINTER, SUMMER GETS SUN MORNING AND EVENING (NOT FOR ABOUT 3 HOURS MID-DAY) Density of weed- how much clear water? 2/3 When do you normally first spot newts and babies each year? THIS YEAR LAST SAW NEWTS IN NOVEMBER, AND NEWTS APPEARED WITH FROGS LATE JANUARY How tidy is your garden? NOT VERY! BELIEVE IN SEMI-ORGANISED CHAOS Do you also have frogs or toads? YEP!! Do you also have ornamental fish? NOPE Do you also have native fish ie sticklebacks? YEP Do you feed fish in this pond? NO How long have you had newts? or how soon after building pond did they appear? I THOUGHT I SAW THEM AFTER ONE YEAR (SPRING) BUT CONVINCED MYSELF IT WAS A FAST STICKELBACK AND MY WISHFUL THINKING. SAW THEM FOR SURE THE FOLLOWING YEAR (ABOUT 6 INDIVIDUALS), SO I THINK IT WAS A FLASH OF NEWT I SAW THE FIRST YEAR AFTER ALL. Mine are common newts (although a mile away there are great crested newts, so I keep hoping). Garden is triangular with two sides busy road, so I am amazed they found the pond. Other corner backs onto gardens which back onto woods/lake. Never seen babies, but that does not mean they are not there, as each year there are consistently adult newts about. I think though that the main predator would be the big dragonflynymphs. Deepest part of pond is 3 feet, so glory knows what happens there. Noticed that the newts congregate near the rocky houses, and some extra holes between the rocks have appeared near the water surface.... What is your situation?

Thankyou Anyanka I really loved seeing all the pics but especially the frog. I love newts though and hope that I still have one or two. I haven't seen any yet.

Thanks for the compliments. The tadpoles were on the edge of the pond. My dog has pushed some pebbles and soil off while drinking (whether its the flavour or the daphnia, she much prefers pond water over tap or filter jug water!) and it's just below the water level; that's pond liner underneath the tads.

I am helping the neighbourhood kids build a small pond right now and we got some tadpoles from a friend. They are so excited, I really hope the survival rate is good, because I hope not to have a bunch of sad kiddies if they all died.
We've not got the pond going yet though. Have the plastic sheeting, but not plants or pebbles.

Sorry guys - my website is currently down - the friend who looks after it has tried to redirect to another location, but as you can see it's not working. I'll try and put the pics back on later today when I get home!
