Abutilon

I have seen an Abutilon climber which has red and yellow 'lantern' type flowers and is listed as semi-evergreen, does anyone know of this as I want one!

Apparently it needs protection from frost - would this just mean a thick mulch of paet or something similar?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

I have an abutilon which is a lax, sprawly, slender stemmed shrub, about 4 feet tall. It has yellow spotted leaves and red and yellow lantern flowers. Could this be the one you mean? It is A. megapotanicum. It is semi-evergreen i.e. it keeps some leaves over the winter getting increasingly tatty until, by Spring, it looks like a complete wreck. Hope it'll put out a fresh lot soon. I have heard it is somewhat tender but abutilons scrape through the winter for me in a city garden with lots of shelter.
They root easily fom cuttings. I'll take a few, assuming it ever does leaf out again!

We have doubts that ours has survived the last winter, which for here was very cold and dry. Virtually nil rainfall and temperatures regularly down to minus 5 and 6 Centigrade. We do not know its age, but it is not a young specimen and has survived previous winters. They flower for an extended period, and as GN says look quite a mess before spring. Old McDonald.

I know this is an older thread but thought I would post my info. I have two,one was purchased at a local garden center and was labeled Abutilon pictum 'Thompsonii' (Wrong label I think) and the other was from cuttings sent to me from a hummer gardener in the Houston area. The one from Houston that I started from the cuttings is about 7ft. tall and is in a 10 inch container. The nursery purchased one is about 12 inches tall in a 10 inch container. I was advised not to put them in the ground and then dig them up because it is too stressful on these plants to dig them up AND bring them inside to adjust to lower light and drier air. I was also advised to only go up one pot size if I repot and to repot in spring. The taller one has adjustes perfectly to being indoors and continues to bloom. I keep it in front of my patio doors (west facing) in the kitchen where the humidity is a little higher from cooking than in the rest of the house. I need to prune out the top as it is really too tall right now but it is still full of blooms at the top also and I hate to lose them but I know it is inevitable. Penny

Wait, if you're unsure about anything ...... and do not over-water, which will be very easy to do, given the plant is absent foliage. Sounds like the plant used virtually all of its energy reserves to push the first (re)flush (after the loss of foliage as a drought response). When the second drought response occurred due to over-watering, the plant was probably exhausted and unable to push a second flush of foliage. When that occurs, it's common for the plant to shed everything it can't support, which can be all or most of the top growth, and die back to the transition zone. It might yet marshal it's meager reserves and push from the transition (roots to shoots) zone, which is the most vigorous part of the plant because it retains its ontogenetic juvenality. Measuring age ontogenetically differs from how we measure our own age, chronologically. Ontogenetically, the most recent tissues to appear are the oldest and viable tissues in the transition zone will always be the youngest and most vigorous. Morrisons Â£1.69. Mine has survived 2 years in Yorkshire. I believe the variegated form is less hardy.

The flower buds keep dropping off my 2 abutilons. Any help to prevent this would be most helpful.

Hi Fisbey,
The variety your are talking of seem to be A. megapotamicum. This typ of Abutilon is depending of it shows virus patterns or not frosthardy to -4Â°C. I have seen this cultivar in January in Dublin.
