Can anyone identify this hedging plant, please?

We've just been to see my son, and come away with a bit of something used as a hedge around his garden.

It's around 3' high, and completely covered in flowers now. They're in very dense clusters, each cluster made up of smaller clusters. Each flower has five or six petals which are white with a pinkish tinge and a central boss of stamens, and the stamens are on white filaments. The calyx is deep red at the tips.

I thought it was the flowers that smelled, but now I have it close up, I find the leaves are the strongest smelling. They're palmate with long, narrow leaflets, tough and waxy, and covered with scent glands.

Has anyone got any idea what it could be, please?
