Hozelock Filter pads

Hiya all,

I have had a Hozelock 9000 filter unit for just under a year now and the filter foam pads are getting a bit worn up now, especially the fine grade one.

Searching the Web for replacement parts has shown that the cheapest I can find is Â£30 for a set. This seems ridiculously expensive to me for 3 bits of foam.

Does anyone know if any sort of sponge can be used as a filter, as long as the grade of holes is the same (coarse/med/fine)?

I do not want to introduce anything into the system which will have nasty chemicals to poison the water so I cautious about getting some cheap foam from the market which is normally sold for cushions/matresses and the like as they may well have fire retardant chemicals etc.

stick to known fish safe without fire retrardants, you might try looking in kockneykoi, ERkoi but remember P&P charges.

Sean, Thanks for the confirmation. I have found the Kockney Koi webstite but cannot spot anything on the other one you mention. Can you post the URL for ERKoi please.

Any other well trusted sites for pond equipment would also be gratefully received. Perhaps we ought to set up a new posting of recommended suppliers so all members can go straight to the trusted/cheap dealers ?

FYI, The My Page email links aren't working very well. You should keep checking back here. You might post that you have free koi in the Atlanta area on other pond message boards. Koi Shack, JB's and American Ponders are three that I know of. Your pond and patio and pool are gorgeous! Koi do breed like rabbits. With 1400 gallons, I would not have over 3 or 4 Koi. They grow like crazy too.

I have an open topped 30 gallon trash can sitting in my "filter pond". It has about twenty holes drilled in the bottom around the side. It is half full of lava rock. Four layers of the pads sit on top of the lava rock. The water flows by gravity on to the top of the filter pads, through the lava rock and out the holes. I clean the pads when they clog up and the water overflows the can into the "filter pond". In the spring I clean it about once a week. In summer it goes a month or more. It never needs cleaning in the winter. I almost never clean the lava rock. The filter pads keep the lava rock really clean. My "filter pond" is a 300 gallon Rubbermaid stock tank that contains the filter, the pump, and a bunch of floating plants. Water is pumped up to the big pond and flows back down by gravity.

I'd suggest using quilt batting instead. A guy gave me the same tip years ago and it really works well. On top of that - it's dirt cheap. Buy a big King sized amount for $8 and it will last you for a year. It's also porous enough to allow for good water flow, but collects all the debris very nicely. You can spray it off (clean it) with the hose once a week (which would make your pond VERY clear), or just do it once every 3-4 weeks. It's up to you and how picky you are about your water clarity. You can buy quilt batting at any fabrics store/chain (or online). Just measure the length and width of your drain, make a template and cut a bunch of them out of the King sized amount you get.

Thank you deb, how often do you replace the coffee filters? I assume after each frying? I did wash the charcoal filter in the dishwasher, however it still stinks from the grease and it is about half the thickness now. So I will have to find a replacement for that.
