I grew potatoes in containers last year. It was actually my first time ever growing potatoes. I don't know if my harvest was great since I really have nothing to compare it to but i was happy with what I grew. I used store bought potatoes. If I remember correctly, my growing medium was mostly miracle grow potting soil but I did mix in some layers of dead fall leaves. I put my potatoes near the bottom of the pot and as they grew, added more soil little by little until the pots were full. I'm trying potatoes for the first time this year. Growing mine in 10 gal grow bags. I planted almost 2 months ago, then layered up soil as they grew. Kept them in my small greenhouse for the first month but then I put them outside a bit too early and some got bit by frost from a cold wind one night (blackened early leaves). Most of them grew out of it though (although a few died). Started from regular grocery store potatoes that I chitted and cut in two, 4 per bag. About 3/4th of what I planted are growing.

Thanks for your kindly advises. I grow a very popular variety, so buying new tubers should not be, theoretically, a problem, Unfortunately tubers from the commercial sources are heavily treated. I don't feel like bringing any chemicals to my one hundred percent organic garden. Am tempted to give it a try and use my own tubers again.

The old saying is to plant on St Patrick's Day, but I bury a sprouting one any time and seem to always get potatoes.... even in our climate. I didn't get to doing that early planting, but discovered that I now have two potato plants - unfound babies from last year - coming up in the same pot as the Ground Cherries. RATS! It seems odd that Gurney would bother to send seed potatoes so late. I know it takes awhile to get big 'taters. Once again the saying goes that when they blossom you can dig for small potatoes. I've done this for years since I like the little ones.
