yellow kangaroo paw (container over wintering)

America zone 5 (freezing winters) I have a small kangaroo paw plant that I bought last spring. I kept in a pot on the patio and it did fine. Late fall, I brought inside after I noticed many new shoots at the base of what I thought was a nearly dead plant. I hope to return it outside next spring if it doesn't die before then. How should I care for it? I read it has rhizomes but does that mean I can remove it from its pot and store the bare roots then replant in the spring? I've had it in a west window and have continued to water it. The days are short, mostly overcast and the house is dry. I've tried putting it under florescent lights to make up for the lack of sun but the leaves are pale and limp as noodles just hanging over the edge of the pot. what should i do?
