Hi,

I am looking for a good strong shade resistant dense Lillypilly to grow as a hedge between my house and 3 storey block next door east side. This hedge will get summer overhead sun around late morning but very little if at all in winter du to massive turpenties blocking northeast winter sun. Currently planted there for screen are very tall conifers that have grown too high to screen effctively and are now dying.

Any suggestions are very welcome

I also would like to row same or similar on the west property border to screen a new development to occur there soon. This side will get more sun and light and won't need to be as tall.

I am confued as to which lillypilly would be best as there are so many. I am in the northern Illawarra area. I have been advised previously to go with syzygium oleosum but this was 12 years ago.

Perhaps you could have a look at this one on the link below. It will take the shade. I have a Syzygium oleosum its not doing too good only grown to 2 mts in four years , but its in the shade a fair bit and it could be the soil its supposed to grow to 8mts H x 3mts wide, it could do ok where where you are ...Cheers...MM

I've planted Syzygium australe 'Orange Twist' along the western boundary fence. The area is in complete shade in winter and only receives brief overhead sun at this time of year. I really didn't hold out much hope, but just wanted to finish the garden by planting something. I've been surprised at how much the plants have grown, not just from the top but at the sides as well. Orange Twist probably wouldn't grow tall enough to replace the conifers but might be OK to block the new development. The label advises that the plant is suited to sun or part shade and gives the size as being 3 metres H x 1.5 metres W.

Salamander: I have a few small cardamom seedlings and I have the red malabar spinach and I can easily purchase seeds for the green....... The "leaves of the gods" I would be interested in. My lilly pilly is 'Blue Lilly Pilly' (there is also a 'Lilly Pilly' and several other lilly pillies) Lilly Pillies are from Australia where they are better known. There are quite a number of closely related species in this family: Java Apple (aka "Wax Jambu" ) Syzygium samarangense Malay Apple, Syzygium samarangense (has pretty magenta colored flowers; the ancient Polynesians brought it with them to the Hawaiian islands) then there's the rare Giant Lau Lau, Syzygium megacarpa Syzygium jambos (it's fruit is not as good as Java Apple) There's also four Syzygium species of wild fruit native to the Western forests of Australia. Java plum is also in the Genus Syzygium, but the fruit is totally different.
