I've received both of the books by Peter Rex that I mentioned in my earlier post, and I just finished "The English Resistance: The Underground War Against the Normans." I recommend it highly; it gave me exactly what I hoped it would--an understanding of the resistance and the players in it as well as the Norman response. I haven't yet read "Hereward, The Last Englishman", though I've already learned a great deal more about this legendary figure than I had known before. For one thing, he was never called "the Wake" (le Wake) by contemporaries. In fact, he gained the appellation when the Wake (Wac) family sought years later to claim descent from him.

Glad the books have turned out interesting lacey, did you buy or borrow them?
That is such a grey period in English history, is much known about the 'real' Hereward?

Veer, I bought the books--very expensive paperbacks. A lot is unknown about the real Hereward, though Rex argues pretty convincingly that he was from a widespread Danish family. (Still a lot of Danes living in the Danelaw at the time of the Conquest.) Nothing is really known about what happened to him after the uprisings. (BTW, remember that I haven't yet read the book devoted to him, but I doubt Rex's general conclusions will change much.)

The books are British publications by Tempus Publishing Ltd in Gloucestershire.
