Australian Natives

Hello, I'm looking for a bit of advice on Australian Natives. I live in Adelaide where the weather can be a bit unpredictable.

I have a garden area 1.5-2m in length and about 10m in width, The soil is good but a bit more on the clay side, the garden is covered by a 70% shade cloth most of the day however the sun gets through and the plants would get plenty of sunlight.

Now, what iam after is a few things:

1) A plant that will live all year round that i can not kill if i forget to water it or fertalize it.

2) A plant that is suited for the size of garden that will not grow very high (1m max).

3) A plant that does not have a big root system that will rip up my new fence and hedging.

4) A plant that is not overly expensive to purchase or maintain

5) colour!

Iam after a few plants to use as ground covers and fence climbers (side fence) and the rest to fill out the large gaps (back fence).

I hope this all makes sence and hope that someone with a bit more knowledge may be able to point me in the right direction.

Eremophila, Olearia and our bush peas are among the toughest and most colorful native plants. But you do need to water them regularly for the first several months after planting or they will die as surely as the average exotic plant.

Fence climbers and ground covers.....where to begin.

Look at some of the Kennedia, Hardenbergia violcea, Pandorea pandorana and Pandorea jasminoides, Billardiera.

Well, I'm glad this "tedhort" fellow might know, because most posters on this forum are yanks and the Australian flora is mostly greek to us. It's not the commonly-grown-elsewhere-in-the-world PIttosporum undulatum, but I could imagine it's another Australian Pittosporum. Or perhaps a Eugenia.

Thanks chas Grevillea have beautiful flowers that one is endemic to our area I grow more plants from the seeds. I was given some seeds of the white Grevillea banksii two years ago and I am hoping that it will flower this year as I have never seen it in real life.. Inga Thank you once again.. I used to post photos a lot once but no one replied so I joined another Australian Forum I often post on GW US site I put Orchids on this week for ID. My roses are blooming at present as I grow them in our Winter, and let them go into dormancy in the Summer when it is too hot.. I will post some tomorrow for you promise.. Certainly a Banksia - but what you actually seem to have is not a seed at all, but a dead flower-head, cut before the seeds have formed. I am sure a bit of searching on the internet would find you a picture of a seedhead, for comparison. Trish

It's found in all states, albeit in dryer areas. About the only thing that R. spinescens isn't tolerant of is poorly drained sites. It's known in ornamental horticulture as being a good plant in coastal areas due to its tolerance of salt pray, so perhaps it's worth a try. Considering how dry it's been in Brisbane of late, I don't see why you couldn't grow it successfully. It's also very tolerant of compaction. Like I said, the only thing I'm aware of in terms of how finicky this plant is would be poor drainage. I'd give it a go, Lynne.

A quick description:

APSquery uses a database created and maintained by the Australian Plants Society (S.A. Region, Inc), which contains descriptions of approximately 6000 native plants. Most are proper species, but the list also includes a number of common hybrids and cultivars.

Hardenbergia violacea is a brilliant climber for your fence. Nice dark green leaves not unlike some eucalypts and masses of violet pea type flowers. I prefer the violet to the white variety, and had no trouble covering a 2.4 m fence panel in 12 months. It doesn't go feral like some climbers.

Can I beg you to disregard the Pandorea pandorana...far too vigorous! In my Melb. house, it took 2 years to rip down my (steel!) verandah posts, and here on my 100 acre bush property, they take about the same time to climb 20 metre trees and drag them to the ground!

Pandorea jasminoides is good, though, or Pandorea "Golden Shower", if you can find one...
