anyone know where to get cheap bonsai pots? since I used to do bonsai, my partner talked me into making a few of these for the herb festivals. she thinks they'd be a hot item, problem is, bonsai pots can be a bit pricey. I found a few places to buy 30+ for a reasonable price, but for the first year I just want to buy around 10-15. Any sources you guys know of? Pam Oh, Edy, you can buy moss from many of the bonsai places. and biggestdav, have you tried misting the moss daily? that should keep it alive. even when it goes brown I've found it will green up if misted regularly.

We have talked here before about how indeterminate plants will respond to top pruning (what they call 'topping') and how it seldom accomplishes what the grower wants - a shorter and bushier plant. It just isn't the nature of the beast. So while I wouldn't do it intentionally on a plant I wanted to save to grow and get maximum production out of, I have done it many times on mother plants to get cuttings for rooting. Normally what happens is the plant sends out 2 new stems/growth tips from the nodes just below the cut. They become the primary branches, replacing the single main. So now you have 2 secondary stems with a divided circulatory system where before you had 1 primary with the primary circulatory system. Picture the difference between the circulation in your fingers vs. the circulation in your arms. Any further new productive growth will be off of them so, yeah, for the most part, it will shoot up tall as its nature dictates. :) Dave PS: I am assuming you are talking about indeterminates since determinate varieties are never pruned. But if short bush plants are what you prefer then determinates is the way to go.

i think the only thing that has failed so far .. is your expectations ... chill ... you bought a tiny babe ... [unlike rhiz and her 5 footer] ... and you seem to want it to grow with the vigor a mature plant does .. frankly .. if it doubled in size the first year.. it way exceeded a mature tree ... in growth rate ... if you get my drift ... ALL of its work .. is going on underground ... growing a root mass.. for the future of what you will see above ... that is what rhiz bought in the pot ... is there hope.. sure.. it alive.. it has leaves .. patience is all it needs ... or.. it pissin you off so much.. just get rid of it.. lifes to short ... ken ps: comparing it to other plants.. is only bothering you ... let it be itself ... just like kids .. dont complain to the third.. that the first two were perfect ... lol .. just like your child.. your plant will hate you .. and that will get you nowhere ... but you can get rid of the tree ... lol ...
