Bland tomato

Was really excited to find a tomato seedling that boasted 50% more lycopene, an antioxidant that helps prevent stroke and heart attacks.

Well let me tell you, it's anti oxidant properties are not going to be much good in the bin which is where I have put most of its crop so far. Juiceless bland tomatoe with a floury texture.

Needs to be used in a sandwich going as part of a school day to avoid sogginess and then needs salt, the addition of which cancels out any goodness it is supposed to do.

Marketed cleverly, but a very good one to avoid,

Anyone else found this to be true?

Last year, out of curiosity, I bought a seedling called "Acid Free" with the obvious implication. It's true that it had no acid bite when eaten, in fact, it had nothing whatsoever. It was tastless, rather solid and crunchy even when fully ripe. There was something vaguely unpleasant about it when eaten. The only thing it had going for it was good production. But who wants lots of tasteless, crunchy tomatoes!
If you're looking for high lycopene, just find the deepest red tomato you can. It's the lycopenes (among other things) that give the red colouring, just as the carotenes give orange tomatoes (and other orange things) their colour.

Happyjacq, I bought a hybrid called "Health Kick" last year, and it was pretty tasteless. It was OK dehydrated - it concentrates flavours, or cooked, but I wouldn't bother to buy it again because I like eating fresh tomatoes best!

Without a doubt, this has been the worst year ever for fruit. Cold wet springs meant poor to no pollination. Endless rain spring and summer. In one stretch in June, we had 18 inches in 18 days. Then triple digit heat w/humidity spelled an end to most berries. Even my TC's in the shade dried up. Cicadas devastated young branches and all blueberries. Didn't really matter to the peaches and plums because of all the disease and curculio and poor pollination. Now, we have had only nine tenths of an inch of rain over the last 2 months. Pretty much everything is toast. So much for the fall raspberries. No gooseberries,black raspberries, or currants, and a thousand new strawberries were lost to floods, weeds, deer, and now drought. Rhubarb was good, and out of 1oo feet of grapes, I got maybe 20 lbs. Stink bugs are healthy. Bring on 2012!!

Posted on a couple other topics that I dont like my pearly pinks. Anyone grow these that hasnt been impressed? or do they need something they are not getting? They are by far the most profilic producer, of anything, any veggie, in my garden, but the most bland tomato flavor ever. Just very disappointing, esp. since at least 60% of all my seedlings that made it through our awful spring, turned out to be PP's. Just curious what others who have grown this one think. Baker Creek has such a large variety to choose, you just pick and see what happens but I know I will never grow these again, and I hope they dont volunteer next year!! With my luck they will, I have yellow pears volunteering from last year, and they were the worst tomato ever!! When I grew yellow pears in PA, they were awesome, I guess the weather in Tn doesnt suit them, they were mealy, watery, no flavor, but yup!! they are coming back this year, uninvited!!

Dave tells the truth on this matter. Taking it a step further, if you happen to have one particular plant with enough fruit set already there, you do have the option of ceasing all water, bringing the plant into attention mode. As well as eating hopefully a better tasting tomato sooner. This is your plant and your choice. I have done this before, and if you have a problem killing a plant from lack of water, I wouldn't recommend it. But I do not. If I come to a point of being satisfied with a cerain amount of fruit, I usually am happy with cutting all water, letting the plant die, and harvesting quickly ripened, good-tasting tomatoes. I've got to mention two things. First, taste is personal, subjective and has a genetic association for any one person. Second, weather can affect the taste of many varieties as can, sometimes, the kind of fertilizer used. I have an ongoing dialogue with Glenn Drowns at Sandhill about the variety Sandpoint. He thinks it's just fine and I call it a spitter. LOL Earl likes Silvery Fir Tree and I can leave it be. Some like the stong tasting Calabash and Noir des Cosebeauf and I can't stand them. LOL Some folks really like Yellow Pear and while I think their cute as can be there are other small ones I'd grow for taste. It's all a matter of personal preference. So it's a matter of growing different varieties each year until a person finds those that he or she likes and adding those to their own personal list of faves. Carolyn

Some of the tomatoes at my local fruit and veg looked like red versions of green tomatoes.Firm shiny.
I saw he had a box of going soft "cooking" tomatoes and grabbed a kilo of those.Then found I was back that afternoon buying the rest of them and turning them into tomato paste.They were beautiful.Of course, I neglected to save any seed.This year I have only got one variety in the ground.The australian Red from Eden seeds.I usually get seedlings but thought I would try a few seeds to see if I could get some success.
I look at the lists that raymondo and others plant and wish I had the time and space to grow some of the different varieties. Checked out the pictures in Ozmantis' Blog, what a great greenhouse you have .I wish I lived near Don Raymondo or Don Grub.I could go tomato taste testing.
There is a whole generation out there that hoav no idea what a great tasting tomato is really like.

Calthrop, we could always organise our very own tomato taste festival in SA. How about that? I'm sure there'd be enough SA gardeners keen to share their bounty with each other. :)

Hi Calthrop. Nothing wrong with Australian Red if it is the same as Aussie which I think it is. Ray might have more idea on this. Just let us know if you want some seeds for some other varieties.
