Prunning a Hydranger Petiolaris

I planted a hydranger petiolaries against a sheltered north-facing wall in autumn 2003. Last year it bore 11 pretty lacecap flower heads which I didn't think it was supposed to do. It has just started to show some green and the old flowerheads are still attached. Do I have to remove them, and where?

Thanks for your help.
