Australian Rain Forest tree Elaeocarpus angustifolius

Hi all.I want to grow Elaeocarpus angustifolius which is a sacred bead for hindus in my garden but weather is not perhaps fit for me to grow this tree as temp range is 12 to 42*C here but I want to take this challenge and try my hands to grow it.

Just few days back I planted one small tree of a height of 3 feet which I got from local nursery and before this I prepared a mix with peat mosss and clay and successfully managed to bring down pH to 5 level by using Sulfur.After all these preparations I planted Elaeocarpus angustifolius plant into my soil at our home garden.Plant is giving me responce and having new leaves on branches after 2 months.May I request experts to provide more suggestions and tips on watering/fertilization/pest control etc.. for growing Elaeocarpus angustifolius?Thanks in advance.

I think your Elaeocarpus will do well where you are.

What about rainfall ? which part of India are you in ?

I am amazed that you found it a local nursery.

The Elaeocarpus reticulatus is grown as a street tree near me, and I live in Sydney. Lovely tree.

Hi Popi.
Infect this is a sacred tree belonging to God Shiva for Hindus and we know this trees from past generations since thousands of years.I am located at western India on the bay of Cambay shoreline.
We generally have very rough monsoon and rainfall is not very regular,upto 2003 our normal rainfall used to around 15 inches but since 2003 it has picked up and in recent years we had around 40 inches rain in the year 2005/6.This time we have 25 inches and still monsoon is not over yet.
In North INdia there are few nurseries who grow this plant regularly and in Nepal you can vastly find this holy tree for hindus.
I am black regarding Elaeocarpus reticulatus you spoke of,while googling I found it similar to E.Angustifolius by images.Thx Popi.

Ive never noticed them up here in the SF Bay as much as I did in Venice/Santa Monica in LA. Which varieties do well here? Do they grow tall? Can they be pruned so that they grow tall and stay narrow? I have a small front yard that is mandated to have a tree and I just cut down our existing one and am considering putting in a fig tree on both sides of the driveway. Hi there, wonder if you could possibly help me. I have a large 6ft D.A. which I purchased a couple of years ago. Over the last two years the crown has reduced quite significantly. After the worst winter the UK has had in 30 years I thought it had died, but to my astonishment it has recovered with an even smaller crown. A couple of months ago I moved it to a shadier spot in the garden. I have clay soil and so mulch well with leaf mould and feed with pelleted chicken manure. Can anyone please tell me if it is likely the crown will regrow to its original size or am i stuck with a tiny crown. Also, am i taking care of it properly or is there anything else I could do. Its too big to put in a pot. Thanks loads

Both top and bottom portions of your Cyathea cooperi tree fern are now dead - they can't be decapitated and transplanted, unlike your own endemic Cibotium (hapu) tree fern species, which will re-root from a severed crown or fallen trunk. Usually the Cibotium's left-over bottom portion will die, but it's still theoretically possible for offsets to get going from the base and along the sides of the old mother plant. In general, only Dicksonia and Cibotium tree ferns can be transplanted by severing the top half of the trunk - most, if not all, Cyatheas are not worth attempting. It might sound mean of me, but I'm kind of relieved your Australian tree fern has bitten the dust. Imported Cyathea cooperi is most unsuitable for island gardens and has proved invasively destructive when it has escaped Hawaiian suburbia and set up home higher up in the forested areas. It's become a serious environmental issue whose repurcussions may be very grave in years to come. I concede that this particular genie is probably out of the bottle - the wind-blown spores will be everywhere - but that's no reason to give the cooperi menace any extra help. Best to support and conserve your own endemic tree fern species above thuggishly competitive imports - while you still have the chance. Steve - Brighton, UK

A forest will choke out a thicket, I often recomend that fruit and nut trees be planted on purpose, so that we lock up carbon and produce food for ourselves, and chocke out the brush plants that are unpleasent to walk through. When you go on a hike along a tail it seems that you are always either bordered by clearing/lawn or by a thicket, but once you break through that thicket you can useually travle quite quickly and easily and have plenty of space to move about. The main reasonfor removing trees and brush historicly wasn't to make things more pleasent, it was to open up land for agricultural use. with a field we can grow staple cerial grains, or legumes, or use it as pasture for animals, while some trees may provide seasonal food for some critters it takes alot of work to survive off of them year round (and trust me when I say thing, willow does not taste that good) . Our modenr day lawns were not contrived from thin air, you need to look at were they came from to understand how they fit in. Lawns are popular mainly in the south (sure, lots of people like them, but in the south they are sick for them) the south had a large portion of its caucasian inhabitants come from scotland (the southern drawl is very closely related to the scots accent) in schotland they have huge green field that are kept down to a few inches all summer long, this is because there is alot of rain and people raise sheep. Now, in the south there isn't as much water in the summer, and there aren't as many sheep, but people still liked the look of home so a lawn with mowers and irrigation is what they came up with.

I, too, think you shouldn't have any difficulty; whilst I've also the variety, Eleopcarpus reticulata, aka the Blueberry Ash, it seems to be performing better in my garden here, on the border of the sub-tropics, than in the slightly cooler Sydney climate, 800 kms south. I didn't give it any special treatment, just stuck it in the ground and it's now - in about 5 years - about 6 metres tall. The flowering and subsequent blue berries aren't as prolific as those I've seen growing in Sydney but it's roaring away quite healthfully.

Ok Funnelweb basically leaves of both this trees look similar perhaps there is a major difference in the growth factor and height of the tree.
May be the fruits of E.Reticulata may be smaller than of E.Angustifolius.
If my knowledge is right E.Angustifolius known as Bluequandong in Australia.Correct me if I am wrong,Thanks.

While surfing the web I found many common names attached with this tree which are very confusing indeed.I know that now a prime name in botanical terms is only Elaeocarpus angustifolius but I see below terms widely(still)used on many web pages.
