I'm in the diggers club - their catalogue is inspirational. Some of the heirloom varieties of veggies are spectacular. I say join.

I've bought Heirloom seeds from Diggers and very happy with them.

I dropped my membership after 12 months mainly because I found they seem to focus a great deal more on enviromental concerns, such as global warming and its associated subjects than on their products and the methodolgy in using them in a home garden situation. Before I inevitably get shot down and burnt at the stake for saying such things, please consider that I practice organic type gardening by default rather than as part of any well meaning present day movement. The quarterly magazine does have some interesting general gardening articles and very colourful and well referenced listing on their various products. Although I have bought quite a range of veggie seeds from them I have also found several other superb sources around our country.. such as Eden Seeds and New Gippsland seeds. Maybe it's their stand on enviromental concerns but I don't really like having the seeds in basic paper envelopes without the protection of small "zip" bags. On the other hand I can't say it has been detrimental to the storage of the seed as I've only had theirs for no longer than a couple of seasons.. and I store them in plastic drawers in my study rather than in a shed. As far as savings on cost as a member.. you need to consider the overall membership cost against the value of the magazines and the discounts on their products. Oh, you do get into their venues for free which is handy for those within reasonable proximity. Their range of veggie seed is commendable and I am very happy with the germination of such.
Might I suggest that you DO take a year's subscription and then make your own mind up as to whether to continue?
There was an excellent member's article on the enviromental vs. traditional gardening content in a recent magazine.. could have been December? I give them full points for publishing it and respecting the views of the author, and others.
Use your new membership as a good opportunity to buy either or both of their excellent veggie books.. the most recent being "Growing your own Heirloom Vegetables, the savings on cost will make joining worthwhile.

They are very good; knowlegeable, well run, quality products, and a good alternative to more nefarious plant breeders. Of course they are still a commercial organsation, of course they are beating their own drum, and of course it is not really a club: members have no rights other than that of a client of goods and services.

Eden Seeds are better

Customer service is pretty poor - seeds good but if you are buying plants they are samll. Not much point in joining unless you are buying lots of seeds or want to support cause. I am biodynamic and find other avenues.
