Popi, rather than see you sitting looking at a blank page for who knows how long, I'll respond if to say nothing more enlightening than 'hello'! I'm very into growing Aussie natives myself but I've never heard of Smilax glyciphylla. Epacris longifolia though I had growing wild in the bush back of my place in Sydney and purchased a plant and had reasonable success with that, but have never seen it here around Tweed Heads, NSW. However, my Australian Native Plants (5th edition) book lists Smilax G. and reports it is the native sarsaparilla [sic], a tendril climber native to Qld and NSW and the flowers and fruits are "not significant". Useful foliage plant especially for a small trelis or low hedge. Leaves are refeshing to chew. The epacris I've seen for sale in some native nurseries, including Bonds in northern Sydney and Nielsens just south of Brisbane. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Perhaps you could try a few seeds of the Epacris you saw in that small patch of bush on your walk, maybe scarify them before sewing. Oh and by the way, a phone call to Sydney Royal Bot. Gardens also might throw some light on the subject. They have a sort of 'help' desk there and I've found them only too willing to assist.

Smilax glyciphylla (Native Sarsaparilla) can be grown from cuttings - this is one of my favurite plants in the bush as the leaves have a wonderfully refreshing flavour of sarsaparilla, root beer or as some people claim, licorice. I find the new growth the best tasting - good bush tucker.

Members of the Epacris genus are notoriously difficult to propogate - try cuttings ... and lots of them ... you might get lucky .. might ... good luck! You request info on Epacris longifolia but I tend to suspect you actually mean E. longiflora (long flower, not long leaf). E. longiflora is a beautiful plant. I don't know of an E. longifolia.

Epacris longiflora is usually done by cutting. I am experimenting with Epacrids from seed and am getting results though not with this species as I have not tried it as it is not native to the Upper mountains.
To collect E. longiflora seed shake capsules on the plant over a bowl. Do not worry if capsules are already open.There will be seed in some of them and you only need very little to get hundreds of seedlings. I sow immediately in Summer but do not sow in Winter. Wait until the Spring.
Sow in 3 parts sand and 1 of peat and cover lighly with smoked perlite or other smoke product. Place in warm glasshouse. When seedlings appear water with very weak solution of Charlie carp and Seasol. Prick out seedlings when a bit bigger into tubes and keep watering with the brew mentioned once a week. The seedlings will be small and for some species very small hence the brew to get a bit of size. Keep seedlings in a warm greenhouse.
Some species sit tiny for a long time and then suddenly grow and others take off quite early. Keep moss away with airy and not too humid conditions.
Some species have not responded to the brew treatment so I am trying bottom heat as well. I work at a community nursery as well and encourage the propagation of difficult plants. Try all the Epacrids in your area.

Try The Habitat, 251 Quary Rd, Ryde. They have small numbers of many locally found native plants. They did have some Smilax glycophylla & Epacris pulchella.

Epacris longiflora is easy from cuttings .Use semi hard growth soak in Ezi root for 20 minutes and then dip into Clonex red and poke into cutting mix and put in gear ved Do the same with Smilax glysophylla leaving at least two nodes Wildplant Blue Mountains Propagator there .
