g'day snoggerboy, yep where you can add in charcoal is is going to be of a help for most of us that is due to accident more than planning, also simply recycling all organic matter through the growing area will give the same results for the plants, and no smoke or fire needed. coppicing a pristene forest simply won't work as damage to other plant life and soil compaction/errosion will rule supreme and the forest will suffer anyway. but those who are advocating slash and burn are talking clear fell scorched earth. also as it is over here and be no different anywhere else, collecting piles of felled timber even for chipping/charcoaling purposes won't happen as this is a much more labour intensive process it is easier for those who have the desire to simply cut it all down and take what they want(so this char charcoal whatever issue will add another wonton waste along with wood chipping our forest this adds in). anything else will add to their cost. over here the trucks for the chip factory drive past pliles of dead felled trees but they aren't interested so eventually these trees get burn where they lay. and in a viable bio-diversity forest any plant/tree that dies should be left there as it becomes part of the recycle process and also becomes habitat for fauna that lives there. also in slash and burn process i figure the twigs and leaves are discarded to serve no purpose. don't think we need anymore reasons to have our forests decimated. and carbon sequencing well that's another furphy, think it out, if we throw money at something it will go away? not holding me breathe on this one either. len

Hola Gartenfee. La pérdida de color de tu Camellia, puede ser debido a una clorosis en las hojas de tu planta por falta de algún elemento o microelemento. También puede deberse a una respuesta de la Camellia a condiciones climáticas diferentes a las habituales como apunta Laurie. Incluso puede deberse a una posible enfermedad cryptogámica. Lo raro es que las diferentes condiciones climáticas de éste año, no hayan afectado a tus otras Camellias. Pero si es por necesidad de algún elemento en la nutrición de la planta o por una enfermedad, también terminará por afectar a tus otras Camellias. El abono del que tú hablas, es lo que se llama "abono foliar". Pienso que puedes aplicarlo en éste momento. Como en todos los abonados, las mejores épocas son cuándo las Camellias están en crecimiento. Para aplicar el abono foliar debes añadirle un Humectante, que es un producto que ayuda a que se fije sobre las hojas. Muchos abonos foliares, insecticidas y fungicidas ya lo llevan incluido en su composición. Debes enterarte si el que tú quieres aplicar, lo incluye ya. También debes controlar y vigilar tu Camellia, por si tiene otros síntomas que puedan indicar un ataque de hongos. Poco más puedo añadir, porque desconozco si la compraste hace poco tiempo y si las otras Camellias tienen más tiempo contigo, porque ésta Camellia de la que hablamos, podría traer una enfermedad desde el vivero. Me había quedado atrás, comentarte sobre la protección invernal. El acolchado de la planta es una buena protección. Ãsto se puede hacer acolchando con mantillo de hojas de Castaño(Castanea sativa) o de roble. Si no tienen mantillo, puedes hacerlo directamente acumulando hojas al pié de la planta durante los meses fríos. Algunos socios de la Asociación Española de la Camelia, han realizado pruebas y el más efectivo es el mantillo de hojas de Castaño. Incluso para que la Camellia tenga una buena vida vegetativa posterior. Si los fríos son muy continuados y fuertes, es posible que tengas que proteger las Camellias tapándolas bien ventiladas. La verdad es que sobre protección contra fríos fuertes, yo no tengo experiencia. Nosotros tenemos que proteger las Camellias sólo contra el sol y la sequedad ambiental. LOL Char! After sonKen's remark I thought mine might not be GC either but Laura saved me!!! The GC I saw in MN. was a young plant but I really looked twice because it looked so much like Karen's. So that's why I posted in the first place. We find out more every time we talk to other hosta people don't we!?! I picked up 12 new hosta and a replacement for one I sold by mistake at my plant sale while I was on vacation with my sister. What a great trip. Connie
