Heirloom Tom for sentimental reasons

Sounds like a good song title!

Firstly, Thanks to a member of this forum there are a few additions to the family. Brandywine Sudduth, Cherokee Purple, Jaune FlammÃ© (gotta have the french one), Black Cherry and Peron have found a home in my garden. I am a very proud mum. You know who you are, thanks heaps :)

The reason for my posting is the more I read about heirloom the more excited I get and thought it would be wonderful to grow something from home (QuÃ©bec).

I have done a few google and found two "types" of tomatoes: Montreal Tasty and Plourde from a seed company that I of course know nothing about. My wish list is: from QuÃ©bec, good taste with a french name. Do you have any idea where I can find more information? Where to start? Etc... Keep in mind that I am VERY new to this. I saw a guy on the american forum called "canadiantomatoes" or something like that I might send him an email.

Anyway, hope you are all doing well. Everything growing nice and strong over here. Fingers crossed

Lyne, glad to hear you like heirloom tomatoes. I think 'canadiantomatoes' is not a guy, unless Jennifer is a guy's name in Canada. *winks*

Can't help you with the varieties, but I'm sure somebody in this forum will be able to do so.

Let us know how Black Cherry did for you. It was such a fantastic cherry tomato for me last season. Everybody loved it. Jaune Flammee is a ripper of a tomato, too. :)

Immediately. I started seeds June 15th. You can start seeds probably into the first week of July. Read Growing Tomatoes From Seed. Very important that you start indoors in SOILESS seed starting mix, water properly but not overwater, and grow the seedlings under intense fluorescent lighting for 16 hours a day until you start hardening off (Gradually expose the plants to sunlight over a period of 1 week). You will want to pick varieties that do well in Florida and at the same time, have ripe tomatoes BEFORE the first frost this fall. So generally you want smaller to medium size varieties. I am finding that what I grow in the Spring and what I grow in the Fall are going to be quite different. I'm thinkin' Stupice (small Russian variety), Anna Russian, Eva Purple Ball (very tasty pink fruit), Creole (takes the heat and keeps on pumping out flavorful medium-sized tomatoes), Jet Star hybrid (early ripening), Sungold (tremendously productive, tasty orange cherry tomato). If you must have a beefsteak/slicing tomato, you can try Gregori's Altai. Azoychka is a tasty large yellow that matures early. I would highly recommend posting a question on the Growing Tomatoes forum about which varieties you might consider for fall growing in Tampa. The reason we can't generally grow tomatoes all summer in Houston is that tomatoes really need 2-3 days in a row of 80's (not 90's!) with evenings in the low 70's to set fruit. If it's 95 degrees every day for weeks with no break, tomato plants start to give up the ghost and their pollen doesn't work. Where to get seeds? clspie, Winter Sowing is not direct seeding...direct seeding has vague results because of predation by bugs and critters, dessication from winds, washouts from storms etc. Winter Sowing containers are protective environments that let in snow, rain and wind, keep out weed seeds, and allow the seedlings to germinate safely. There's no hardening off. no damp-off and the root systems are just amazing. FYI, several years ago I demonstrated the method to the government and extension representatives--it blew their minds and they asked me to join their partnership. In 2003 WinterSown Educational became a USDA/NAL AgNIC Alliance Partner and you can nowadays find the method described in the USDA Thesaurus. He thinks it's hideous and it doesn't hold any sentimental or aesthetic value to him. Maybe with a cover and a little catch-all basket on it he won't be so annoyed LOL!" Melle, from what you've shared here you have an item that is in terrible shape, that you have no use for, no obvious space for and that your husband desperately wants to get out of the house....so why hold on to it?!?! I have always liked that Willliam Morris decorating philososophy 'If you want a golden rule that will fit everything, this is it: Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.' I know how easy to get into the mind trap of what you COULD do with something. You could paint it. You could stain it. You could sand down the top. Or replace it. Or sew a cover. Or move it....and if after all the years an item has been sitting you haven't actually been motivated to do any of those things, then for goodness' sake, it ain't happening. I am still wrestling with getting rid of my own sentimental attachment: my dining room table and chairs. They belonged to my mother, who died young. The first nice furniture she and my dad ever bought etc. I even purchased a hutch from the same furniture company many years later to finish the set. And guess what: I really don't care for the style and several of the rush chair seats are again falling apart--years ago I already went through an expensive nightmare fixing them. Although I would like to replace the furniture I get a pang thinking of getting rid of this stuff, as if I'm getting rid of my mother's memory which is silly of course. So I'm as guilty as anyone of hanging on to sentiment when function and style are long gone from the items. Good luck! Ann

Thank you so much guys for your further helpful comments. So it seems GT and TG may grow too big... 5 ft, 6ft, 7ft.. and ratdogheads's GT canes as high as 12 ft, even when grown as a shrub?! This is why real life experiences are so valuable... thank you! It sure seems they are happier as a climber, and if so, and I assume they are also wider than advertised in that case, they are most certainly beyond what this specific space can accommodate. I want whatever plants that will sit there to be happy and comfortable... (*BUT, I am determined to find some other bigger space for them in the future... they are too beautiful not to!). So, in that sense a shorter side of the range would also be good as well for that particular space (it's safer). I checked out Molineux and Poet's Wife. They are pretty, and I saw yesterday the ARS website saying Molineux can take some shade. ratdogheads, how many hours of sun does your Molineux get? I've been searching/reading those varieties suggested... and currently about spinosissimas. mad_gallica, which yellow spinosissimas would you particularly recommend, and where can it/they be purchased? I saw a yellow one (R. spin. Williams' Double Yellow) at UK's David Austin, but US's does not seem to carry it. I also saw Harisons Yellow which as I understand it a half spinosissima? Could you please share your experience if you grow this variety? After the last post I also read at ARS's website that Julia Child can take some shade too, and Heirloom Roses' website says floribundas can be one of good choices for part shade. I'd appreciate it if anyone can comment about how JC actually does in part shade. Thank you again for your comments so far, they are really helpful!

Jennifer is definitely the one who knows a lot about Canadian tomatoes, and I assume that would include any that originated in Quebec. She also knows the website of an online list of tomatoes and pics that is written in French, but I can't seem to find it in my bookmarks. Ray might have it bookmarked?

I know French is not QuÃ©becois but I have one or two veggie varieties of French origin if you'd like:
Sucrine - lettuce
Noir de Carmes - melon (cantaloupe to Victorians)
Petit gris de Rennes - melon (cantaloupe to Victorians)
Longue de Nice - pumpkin
Sucrine du Berry - pumpkin

Just came back from buying compost bins and check if there was any reply just in case and VOILA! you guys are fantastic.

This is sooooooooooooooooooooooo cool! I thought it was a silly idea and was going to be difficult to find etc. The idea of having a little bit of "home" in my backyard is just *sigh* very special :))))))

PS Ray, how did you like the two French pumpkins (aka squash upover)? I was going to order some of the Sucrine du Berry, but have held off until hearing from someone other than Amy Goldman. :>)

Haven't tried the melons or pupmkins yet as I got the seeds during our last summer. Will certainly be posting about them when the time comes.
