grew violets under lights for years.. rooting many a leaf .. i am surprised you say that they don't come true ... i don't understand how rooted tissue can not be genetically identical ... go figure .... i am sure.. i could find a AV forum and find out for sure.. but that hobby is passe.. so i will leave that to others ... i don't understand your CROSS POSTING claim either .. from where ..??? anyway.. i digress.. you are confusing many different things here.. and others have answered.. but i am going to try to make it as simple as possible ... seeds .... are a function of mom and dad genes.. they rarely [correct me if i am wrong] produce an exact replica [except for the species thing you note] .. because of the gene thing.. the kids NEVER look like the parents ... might be close.. but never EXACT .. cuttings... can NOT .. as far as i understand... change themselves at a genetic level [perhaps without some exterior thingee] .... so you end up with the same plant again ... whether by cutting and sticking them. or air layering ... or any other method.. all you are doing is encouraging the plant to use some hormones that encourage roots ... or which they produce themselves .. plants that wont root ... many trees/conifers/shrubs.. just wont root no matter what you do .. or more importantly from a profit outlook ... will not root in a reasonable time frame ... so the producers out there will graft them ... take a plant with roots intact.. and graft a piece of another plant onto it roots.. and then eventually cut off the understock leaves ... thereby reproducing a plant like the good one ... again.. i don't see how the grafted part can change its genetics.. so you end up with what someone above called a CLONE ... perhaps the confusion is in the term REPRODUCTION .... a plant can reproduce [or you can] through a sharing of genetic material ... but a wholesale producer can reproduce a slew of stock through grafting or rooted cuttings.. if you can wrap your mind around the two uses of the same word .. then you can start to understand some of the answers above ... asexual reproduction means.. WITHOUT genetic material transfer .. CORRECT ME IF I AM WRONG ... oh.. as for your laceleaf... if you try to grow it with seed... the laceleaf part of the genes is PROBABLY recessive.. so maybe out of a million seeds ... you might get one with the leaf .... if it werent recessive.. they would be flooding the market with them.. because they are so easy to make/reproduce and since they are nearly impossible to root [as noted above] .... as most maples are ... then you are only left with grafting as an option .... and if you knew all this.. then consider i took the time to explain it to someone else who might read it ... i hope i helped .. ken

Thanks for the replies. It seems eucalyptus grafting is more hush hush than fight club. Looks like we'll be going with a grafted C. ficifolia but I have started growing a few E. deglupta and E. gregsoniana from seed just from curiosity. Out of 100 seeds, I have four deglupta seedlings coming along and 60 out of 100 gregsoniana shooting up. I understand Sydney and Melbourne botanical garden's troubles. I'll have to check out the Alloxylon flammeum. Sounds familiar.
