need help to i.d. native?Daisy

Sorry,don't as yet have pic.I believe this to be an annual,growing in light soil in south west QLD,in flower now,flower colour>bright yellow(not an everlasting)in clusters,each flower approx25mm dia on a plant approx30cm with foliage similar in appearance to a marguerite daisy,flowers were covered in butterflies,moths etc...flowers have a pungent smell when crushed.(isn't fireweed) could this be a variety of senicio?I have been told it also comes in white.The whole plant is very pleasing to the eye.Hoping this doesn't turn out to be a weed! Thanking all for your help.

select Asteraceae from the left list, you will then scroll down to find Senecio listed on the right. If you check the listed varieties you will see by the photo's if you are on the right track.

It's not something I am familiar with. Best of luck.

Two possibilities are Senecio magnificus and S. gregorii - though neither has dissected leaves quite like a marguerite. That could suggest S. lautus subsp. dissectifolius.

Thanks for the replies. I'm in SC, z8. I have the original picture I posted in a much larger size, along with 2 more pics of this shrub, but I had to downsize the pic to meet the 61kb size limit. I'm new at this, so I'm working to get the full size pics online & post a URL.

Plantsplus, will get back to you later about this, as I need to sleep now and am off early tomorrow to spend weekend away. For the meanwhile, have a look at the Calotis lappulacea pic linked below; note the very small ray florets around the edge, and the spiny 'seeds' (techically the fruits) developing. Prickly fruits, or burrs, are a feature of all Calotis spp. Many have larger and more colourful ray florets than C. lappulacea, resembling Brachycomes. Compare this with a typical Senecio - I suspect you have one close by in the form of the 'dreaded fireweed' of cow paddocks, S. madagascariensis, with yellow daisy flowers on a branched plant about a foot high. It has very similar flowerheads to the native S. lautus, but the latter has more dissected leaves. The article on Asteraceae in Wikipedia has some useful stuff on the technicalities of their flowerhead construction, though it's rather limited. Here is a link that might be useful:

I like the Aronia (chokeberry) suggestion. The leaf shape and size are more similar to my Aronia than any of the native Prunus that grow here, including P. pensylvanica, P. virginiana, and P. americana.

Thankyou Justcorreas for your quick reply...I couldn't find that site,sorry.Tony,thankyou also for your reply...I am unable to find any images of Senecio lautus subspecies dissectifolius.This may be it,so will probably have to take myself off to local library and see whats there.

Thanks again for the help justcorreas,had a look at the site but unable to identify clearly if any of these senecios are the one,w ill have to see a closeup of leaves and flowers.I hope to have a pic of it by this weekend...so will post then and see whatyou all think.
