orange marmelade in trouble

I have had a orange marmelade for at least 2 or 3 years in a pot, and which has been quite healthy, and close to a year ago, had the opportunity to plant into the ground.

It has been doing very well until 2-3 weeks ago, and now a lot of the leaves close to the trunk are dying off, and the outer leaves (particulary the younger ones) are curling, and the general colour of the plant is not a healthy green.

There is a pine tree maybe 8 foot away - could this be leeching the soil? Being the middle of winter, what could I try to save the bush?
