forgot to mention stonehenge is now erect, you should have heard the moaning I had to endure whilst it was being moved. Quite how stoneage man managed to erect stonehenge is beyond me. I only wanted a few piddly little stones moved.

It looks really good Linda. I bet you will be glad when it is all finished with the turf down and you can just sit and relax. It must be nice to have both kinds of ponds even though your other pond is very formal as well from what I remember. I really liked that one as well.

Your garden is just as lovely as your beautiful home. Thank you for sharing these wonderful pictures. So beautiful. Every garden has its drawbacks, but your garden seems to have overcome and its beauty by far outweighs any pestulence or little critters. You have really painted a beautiful still life onto your gorgeous canvas which you have brought to life in the desert. I could import you some blackspot, cercapsora, anthracnose, rose mosaic or rose rosette disease, flooding, drought, snow and freezes around Easter, termites, thrips or aphids, voles, moles, squirrels, Japanese beetles, rabbits, chipmunks, humidity, tornadoes, diamond back rattlesnakes, cottonmouth moccasins, copperhead moccasins, brown recluse or black widow spiders, hurricanes, coyotes, alligators, hail and drunken Alabama football fans, just so you know what it is like to garden in the south? Every region has its drawbacks. I am just kidding. I would certainly not do that to your beautiful garden. You have some great roses and a beautifully done garden.

Thanks for the lovely tour, Rita! You have made excellent use of your "average size suburban lot." I bet you don't have much grass to mow! It's great that you can screen your view from the neighbors.....makes for a nice private place to enjoy your garden. Thanks for sharing, Julie

Where would a gardener live if working in NY?

Welcome to the East Coast, Michael in Chicago. I've travelled to and enjoyed many states, but I think my home state, NJ, is a pretty cool state. For your consideration, some information I gleaned from a talk on native plants presented yesterday to Monmouth County Master Gardeners: New Jersey is the third smallest state in the Union, but has 1,910 vascular plant species - more than states 11 times its size. New Jersey has five physiographic provinces, very rare. In the northwest is the ridge & valley region, then, stretching in bands essentially running northeast to southwest, the highlands region (with conditions similar to central Ohio) and piedmont region; below those, the inner coastal plain to the west, and, to the east, the outer coastal plain (with conditions similar to central Virginia). New Jersey is at a crossroads, or intersection, in the plant world. This is where southern plants pushing the limits often reach their northernmost limits ... and where northern plants reach their southernmost. There are also species here in NJ that are also found in Canada ... but not in New York or Connecticut, as their ancestors were carried down on the leading edge of the glacier, which stopped here in New Jersey. For anyone who likes to garden, this is pretty good stuff.

Now Les, you sound like you come from the country! I think the brass spittoon can be found at the old Mississippi capitol building, where they had the most colorful marble columns and tiles I ever saw, and spittoons were in just about every corner. Such a spittoon might look good located next to your urn with the gold hosta in it. :) But I think it would compete too much for attention beside that floral majolica urn of HH. Besides, who would be willing to polish it up? Now a tarnished old antique brass like a ship's bell, yeah, I could see that. It would have a verdigris cast to it.

Are the rocks in the picture the "piddly little" ones?! I dread to think what a "big" one looks like! I love big rocks like that, but I've never been brave enough to get any - once they're in place, there is no way at all to move them again without heavy machinery, or a visit from the caped man who wears his underpants outside his trousers. Our front and rear gardens are quite small too, so they would look a bit too dominating - if we could get them in there at all!

I have to make do with smaller rocks that I can put down, "um and arr" about them, move them around, "um and arr" again etc etc. Even this is quite a hassle because I have to make several trips to buy them and bring them home - the car suspension will only take about 6 rocks/flagstones/BagsOfCobbles/whatever at any one time...!

They're 'piddly' compared to Stonehenge Hissy :-) It takes quite a bit of effort to move them. We used round fence posts to roll them, removing the rear post to the front as you progress to your destination. Then it takes my two big strapping lads and my equally strapping son in law, to man handle them into place. I have buried them in soil about a third of the length deep. I have not used concrete as that would make moving them again almost impossible. I had a 'stonehenge circle before we built the new pond. Got it way before such stones became fashionable. I have to think very carefully before they erect and bury them in, because moving is quite a challenge. I do chide the boyz tho' I mean Stoneage man moved their stones, which were huge, over 100's of miles... we're only talking about moving ours a few yards in our back garden :-) I certainly would'nt get any of the stones in a car. I've got the stones erect now, so I'll post a picture of that.
The idea of superman lending a hand is quite appealing... so far all I have seen is Clives paunch :-)
