New garden - ot & dry summer, wind & rain winter

We are just beginning a brand new garden for ournew house on paros. We are keen to know what shrubs & trees for the boundaries we can use. We also want to know about perennial flowers for borders and low ground cover that will withst and the heat & sun in summer.

We also have 3 large pergolas that we want to train bourgainvillea & jasmine over but need to know the varieties etc, some in large pots others in the very limestone soil (marble rock is the base material of the island) any hints or relevant weblinks would be much appreciated. Yassas Philip & Luc

Hi, well as nobody more knowledgable has replied here is my input. I live in the south of Spain on pure limestone (an old quarry is about 200 metres away). In summer we are usually about 32 - 35ÂºC (although the lower 40Âºs are not rare) and in the winter I get a lot of wind (but not much rain). I am mad about passion flowers and have about 60 different varieties (you can see some on http://photobucket.com/albums/v409/cincinnata/) I also like any other tropical climber. Bouganvillea and jasmine should do well for you but don't plant the first near a swimming pool as its very messy when its shedding its flowers. You may like to try Thunbergia Grandiflora, does well for me. I also have Thunbergia Mysorensis, Stephanotis, Vigna Caracalla, Jasmin Sambac, Quisqualis Indica, Hardenbergia (lilac and the white - beautiful at the moment). I haven't got much room for trees but in neighbours gardens there are Bauhinia (both the purple and the white) Judas Tree, Mimosas, Jacaranda, Brachychiton Acerifolius, Frangipani, Erythrina - the list is endless. As far as shrubs go - for the scent but it can be overwhelming Cestrum Nocturnum. Others that do well here are all the varieties of Oleander, Hibiscus, Brunfelsia, Datura/Brugmansia, Dombeya, Lantana etc. I have had to replace my trailing geraniums as here they are massacred by the Moroccan butterfly so in their place I have put mauve lantana repens. For bright spots of colour the osteospermums are perennial (and self seeding!) I suggest you tour round your area and see what other people in your zone have and then if you want to be different just try out new plants - you can't always tell what will adapt until you try it! Hey FBB: Don't feel bad, it happens to me to a varying extent every year. My extols me to hill the corn every year. She thinks that it will produce more prop roots thereby minimizing the lodging. I agree with her about causing greater prop root formation but, still I get blowdown. The reasons I don't like hilling: 1) it is alot of physical work 2) it doesn't seem to stop the lodging 3) I have to flatten the hills back out in the fall (more work). However, this year, in order to reduce the labor I used my tiller to loosen about an inch of soil on both sides of each row and hilled the plants with the easy to move soil. It made hills about 8" tall around the plants. We had 3" of rain wind and pea sized hail Monday evening over a 2 hour period and my corn is still standing. HURRAY! I'm looking forward to picking standing like a homo sapiens rather than a gorilla this year. There may be another benefit to hilling. For the 1st time ever, I have corn root worms. Having the extra roots that formed from hilling may have saved me from serious losses from the worm s the plants may have grew new roots faster than the worms could kill them. About 5% of my plants fell over and shriveled which is how I discovered the (very late in the season) worms.

I was just last week making a list of the annuals I wanna get again next year because they have made it this far and are still looking good! Angelonia and Torenia are at the top. My first year with a Brug and here in Metro Atlanta I FINALLY have 2 blooms starting - I was quite jealous of a few neighbors who have hundreds of blooms all over several plants, and was thinking maybe it wouldn't bloom this first year. Also my first year with a Hibiscus, and am quite happy with the display on this "Plum Crazy" the past month. My honeysuckle doesn't look too happy, so it goes on the list to trim way back this winter. All my Sage is still going strong, though it's been wetter this year than past. Am readying to overseed the lawn, especially the dog's yard, if I can keep them away with chicken wire long enough to germinate. The Dogwood is starting to turn and the Yoshinos have already had a partial leaf drop, so I'm sad... Fall's not so bad I am NOT a winter person. Except that means Spring comes next!

Here in GA it has been raining cats and dogs but it is starting to look like Maui here as Trail said so lush and 3D green. I still walk/run rain or shine. The last two times out I got so wet I could wring out my hair and clothes and stupid me had mascara on and it got in my eyes and I could hardly see where I was going. Two people stopped and asked if I wanted a ride, I mean it was coming down in sheets. But I couldn't dare get in their car soaking wet. But I will go again tomorrow if it is still raining. The only time I get a little freaked out is if it is lightning too. But the rain this time doesn't have lightning, it's soft and warm rain, but I think I will leave the makeup off, my eyes are still burning!!! I am sorry that all of the 4th of July festivities got canceled yesterday and all the fun outdoor activities at the lake. It is making summer seem kind of short! Otherwise, I have been doing lots of baking with the dogs, husband has been working in Wyoming for the past week but home now, yea!

this is from usa taday weather not sure how accurate it is : Q Are the winds on one side of a hurricane faster than on the other side? A: If a hurricane or other tropical cyclone is moving the winds on one side will be faster than on the opposite side in relation to the ocean or ground the storm is moving over. In the Northern Hemisphere the fastest winds will be on the right side, if you are looking in the direction of the storm's movement. That is, if the hurricane is moving toward the west, the strongest winds will be on the north side; if it's moving north, the strongest winds will be on the east side. It's the opposite in the Southern Hemisphere. (See the question right above this one for why.) To see why the winds on the right side of a Northern Hemisphere hurricane or typhoon are faster than those on the left, imagine the winds are circling the storm at 100 mph, and the entire storm is moving forward at 10 mph. With counterclockwise winds of 100 mph added to the forward speed of 10 mph on the right side, a ship there will be hit by 110 mph winds because the 100 mph winds and forward motion of the storm are in the same direction.. Another ship, to the left of the storm's center, where the 10 mph forward motion is subtracted from the 100 mph wind speed, will feel 90 mph winds. This was first realize in the 19th century and was one of the first important advances in understanding tropical cyclones and other storms. In fact, this knowledge was called the "Law of Storms" in the 19th century and various scientists wrote books telling ship captions how to use it to figure out where they were in relation to a storm's center and which way to go to said away from a storm's strongest winds and highest waves. This is described in detail in Chapter 2 of Hurricane Watch: Forecasting the Deadliest Storms on Earth by Dr. Bob Sheets and Jack Williams, published by Vintage Books, 2001 Irene is moving north so winds will be greater on the east side and thus the fear of great water surges in NYC. As we are shortly moving to Rhodes, I was impressed by the list of plants but so far we have not found any good nurseries there. As I see you live in Greece can you tell me where I can buy these plants.
I understand the best time to plant is October so would like to get some planting done as soon as possible.
