wanted: Australian Tree Fern

Mine died from scale :-( It was so beautiful and my favorite.

Does anyone have one to trade for? They are difficult to find in nurseries in this area.

How would we know whether they're difficult to find in a nursery in Missouri?
Maybe you should try to find something that's native to your own country.

You need to also consider quarentine issues. It is just not the right thing to do to go off and import bilogical material into you country and placing your agriculture sector amd your environment at risk from new plant diseases etc.

I agree that they are beautiful but also a challenge in the average home. I keep mine outside from about early April into the fall (depending on temperatures). This year it was outside well into December (and survived temperatures of about 28 F). Now I have it in a room crowed with palms and other ferns so it is quite humid. I know people will disagree with this--but I keep mine in a saucer which I try to keep filled with water. I disagree about letting them dry out. I have (repeatedly) found out the hard way that they have virtually NO tolerance for even remotely dry conditions. This time mine is surviving and growing!

Yes you can cut a Cyathea cooperii off if it gets too tall. Keep the top plus enough of the top trunk to replant at the height you want plus half a metre to be buried in soil. . The bottom part will not regenerate and needs to be removed. Trim back the old fronds being carefull not to damage the new unfurling ones. Replant in fresh slightly acid soil, give it some organic fertilizer, water the trunk and base well but not the fronds. Make sure there is adequate drainage. give the plant some dappled shade if you can.

They would be grown in the states and thats the best place to start looking.There is a nursery in California..I think its called Australian Plants..they would probably have Cyathea and Dicksonia species growing there.

There is a treefern discussion group on Yahoo, but I'm being blocked when I try to give you the e-mail address.

Why not try this treefern discussion group? Plenty of people in the US grow Dicksonia anatarctica and Cyathea cooperi, so there must be some available at nurseries.

I live in NW Arkansas and just received my 5 beautiful, inexpensive and well packaged tree ferns.
