Penpal in Yorkshire Dales?

I hope I won't get thrown off the boards for this post but I am at a loss on how to find someone who might give me a bit of guidance on a holiday that I plan to take in 2007 to the area around a town called Settle. My father came from a village called Giggleswick about 1914 and I would like to visit there and the surrounding area.

Does anyone know where I might find someone in that general area who could suggest transportation, local airports, lodging and such while in the area.

And since Settle is closer to most of Lancashire than most of Yorkshire, the Lancashire Tourism Board

You can actually get around The Yorkshire Dales by train and bus if you have the time, but a car would give you a lot more flexibility. You'll be right on the edge of the Forest of Bowland which is a beautiful area. Try to visit the main attractions during the week as it is a popular daytrip for visitors from nearby large cities. You also have the whole of the Yorkshire Dales and even the Lake District. The cities of York, Lancaster, Manchester, and Liverpool have their own attractions, and you are within reach of Lancashire seaside towns such as Morecambe and Blackpool.

The closest big international airport would be Manchester. Leeds/Bradford is possibly a little closer but you kight struggle to get a flight to there. There are also airports in Liverpool and Teesside that you might be able to get flights to.

Hi have taken the liberty of appending the address above as a starter, Untill I retired in 1998 I lived near York, but my work area covered the whole of Yorkshire and visited Settle and Gigleswick in my travels.
The nearest airports would be either: Leeds/Bradford or Manchester, you would have to check with your travel agent which one take flights from Canada.To get a broader view of alternative web sites, I just typed in : north yorkshire in a search and came up with several that could be useful. Incidentally I have retired to live in France so am no longer in the area concerned, hope info will help.

Don't miss Harrogate, the Valley Gardens, and the walk through them to Harlow Carr. It's about a 2 mile walk, I believe. I had a brilliant time in early October 2004. Of course it rained, and I ended up viewing Harlow Carr in a downpour. I didn't mind, because I had the gardens almost completely to myself, and the cafe/garden center/shop is nice and warm. I expected rain, though, and took a wool overcoat, a wool shawl/scarf, an umbrella and waterproof walking shoes. I also took copious notes, and have since ordered nearly all of the plants that caught my eye. I also liked just wandering around York and the surrounding area--I had a one-week course for my job, and used the weekend before and after the course to explore York, plus the early mornings and early evenings to walk to other nearby villages. It does rain a lot in the UK, regardless of time of year, so it's best to be prepared for it as I was (I lived in the UK for about 2 years as a child). Don't let the rain stop you, though, or you will miss out on a lot.

Mitchdezj, thank you. I thought maybe you didn't want me to post here any more, so I'm glad to learn that's not the case. Those shades really are works of art, but I know they're not to everybody's taste. Shees, you can get crystals on eBay. Perhaps in lamp shops too? The lampshade you have is cute, but it isn't quite right -- a bit small/short for your lamp. Did you look at the lampshades on eBay? If you know how to hem a skirt (by hand) then you can sew a lampshade. It's the same kind of stitch. Basically, you wrap the wire frame in a special cloth tape. Then you stretch one panel of lining very tightly across it, pinning it to the tape (generally they're done one panel at a time). Pin points face inward, toward the center of the panel. Then you hand sew it on with stitches about 1/4" long, knotting every 4 stitches or so, and pulling the fabric tightly as you go. Then trim the lining fabric as close to your stitching as you can get, without cutting your stitching. Continue doing that until all panels are covered. The tricky part is not getting stabbed too much on all those pins. Try not to bleed on your shade. lol! I think rubbing alcohol will remove it if you do. First round is your lining fabric, usually white silk. Second round is your decorative fabric(s), quite often also silk, or velvet. (In picking your fabric, hold it up and see how it looks with light shining through it.) Sometimes you want to add a third layer of lace, or pleated nylon, or appliques, or whatever. Then you hot glue on the fringe, then the braid. The job takes a little time and patience. It's a good "in front of the TV" project. Of course, you can make either a modern shade or an antique one the same way. The quicky way is stretch it tight and glue it, one panel at a time.

Netla, the first book that came to mind, though an old classic was Mary Barton: A Tale of Manchester Life by Mrs Gaskell, written in the time of those 'dark satanic mills'. Modern writers from that area include Val McDermid, popular crime writer and Jeanette Winterson Oranges are Not the Only Fruit; she has become an increasing angry lesbian so don't know about her other work. ;-( You will love both Durham and York, both small enough to easily walk around and with beautiful church and other buildings. There is The Story of Durham by Douglas Pocock which looks interesting (though pricey). The site below gives some eg's of books set in/about York. Loads of history . . . Roman, Viking, railways, chocolate-making etc. Whitby is also interesting. Look out for anything from Saint Hilda to Captain Cook . .. and Dracula! Hope this helps a bit. If you are going to Settle then you will have to go to Malham and see the Malham Cove and the Tarn and then there is the water fall walks at Clapham. it is a fantastic area and my second favourite area after the Lake District.You can use public transport but a hire car would be so much more useful, it being a rural area. From Manchester airport it should only take a couple of hours. If hiring a car you may need to ask for an automatic if you are not used to a manual gearbox. Most cars over here are manual gearboxes and I have heard of Americans being caught out by them.

Thank you so much for the info so far. I don't want to use a travel agent here as I think that I would most probably be put up in newer hotel chains, I would much prefer to stay in older establisments that would give me a better feel for the place. My husband and I like our stays in B&B's here in the US and would like to do the same in England, a taste of the past.
I would love to have a car and Thanks for reminding me that the rest of the world still uses stick shifts as we call thwm, hubby can do it but not I if there are any hills. I will remember to book an automatic so that I can drive too.
Any advice on lodgings?
I was born a Sedgwick and would love to try to find some family conections while there, any hints on how to go about that?
