I don't have pictures of our previous home, but we had a mix of hardwood and two colors of carpet---one of which was neutral. One bedroom was a darker color(green) and came off the neutral colored hall carpet just as a straight change of two colors butted together under the door to the bedroom. When the door was closed the other color wasn't visible. It looked just fine when open also. There's certainly no need for a threshold of any kind (and sounds like it might look odd IMO). If the carpet colors were incompatible, then it would be weird, or if you used too many colors, it might begin looking odd, but one other color carpet looks fine. I love hardwood and prefer it in many parts of the home, including the kitchen. I prefer the quiet on the stairs of a carpet or runner. If you do hardwood, you usually also want to add area rugs...so you're doubling your cost for flooring in those rooms. Perhaps a budget isn't an issue, but it's something to keep in mind even if this is your dream home. One other thing, in my experience with whichever you go with, a good carpet or hardwood flooring installer will make your thresholds so there is no need for a raised piece of wood threshold or metal when transitioning to another area or room. If you're going from wood to carpet, they can just roll the edge of the carpet and completely hide the tacking. The carpet may be slightly higher in some cases, but is not an issue for tripping (90 yr old mother proved that). When the wood short widths are meeting another material, they simply insert a piece of wood going the opposite direction of the installed wood and on the same level of the installed wood to finish it off. Sorry I donÂt have pics of two colors carpet, but hereÂs the threshold change that is completely flat. The woodÂs done the same way if the other material is carpet, and the carpet is simply rolled and tacked invisibly. OK, climbing off my soap box nowÂ.
