Can you post a shot of the whole plant so that we can see its structure? It would be helpful to know if it's truly a climber or if it's a large HT (Zone 6, not sure how large is to be expected of QE). Contrary to popular belief, pruning isn't something we do because our neighbors cut all their roses to knee high. Pruning is for training, for removal of old, dead or damaged wood, for controlling shape and/or size, or, in some roses, for stimulating new growth. Climbers grow differently from shrub roses, so a good ID will be very helpful for those here to help you stimulate new growth and renew your plant. To state the obvious, you can do a lot for your rose by pruning the surrounding shrubs, so they don't impinge on your rose's sun. Bear in mind that those shrubs may provide winter protection for your rose, though. I'd go slowly with pruning the rose itself. Old plants can be extremely reluctant to produce new basal canes. This year, I'd give it TLC: clean out old wood, deadhead, mulch the base with compost, forming a 4 foot diameter circle around the rose, and fertilize in the springtime. Providing regular water in the summer and more sunshine can do a lot for a rose.

The only rose I can think of that is very fragrant that would fit a 6 foot tall wall is Spray Cecille Brunner, a Polyantha-Tea that was introduced in 1881 and sported to the Spray form in the 1920's. It is an altogether attractive plant, covered with sprays of dainty pink roses they are not large roses, but there are large numbers of them, and the scent carries to me as I walk past. Plus the leaves are abundant and attractive. . In addition it has good rebloom and is easy to care for. see photos on helpmefind.com/roses on "search" N.B. the climbing forms of Cecille Brunner do not rebloom as much, and are house eaters. I wonder if a red rose wouldn't crisp with the heat. 6 feet is not a lot of height for a regular climber and something like Lamarque or Mermaid would cover six feet while you turned your head the other way. She's going to be a delight, I can already tell. Thanks all! Also, yesterday I found a taker for the GC that's there now. He's the guy helping me build some metal structures for the garden. He asked me for a cutting of GC and my eyes popped out of my head and I said "HOLD ON, let's do better than that!" Serendipitous. That's PHASE ONE of the project already done ;) This weekend I'm taking it out and potting it up for the recipient. That will be PHASE TWO. Then begins my work of trying to prepare the planting hole, the cozy new home of MAC, PHASE THREE. I broke the news to F. about the fact that I'm putting in a climber. I sensed his panic, about the jasmine and the eaves troughs and general untidiness of such an endeavor, but I think he's recovered from the initial shock and is moving into the acceptance phase. Maybe I should call that PHASE ONE really. :)

Repeat blooming would definitelt be a plus. I don't know what it is but with my short season I really want them to bloom more than once. Greedy I guess, lol! Quick Silver looks really pretty, Moses. I hadn't though of a lavender but against the white post it would be lovely. Lady Ashe might be too stiff. Since I need it to go up all the blooms would be at the top above where I could enjoy them but I like the color. I don't know . My mind is boggled. Good thing I have time to decide since I'd have to order for next spring now anyways. Thank you everyone for all the great suggestions!
