I would try to get a half grown Crocanna. (Adults are very ferrocious and hard to keep in captivity) They are totally carnivorous. They have the ability to literaly run up trees and often drop on their prey from great hights. I believe their preferred pray is Yowie. You may need a permit from National parks and Wildlife to keep one legally though. ATB teddy,J

Hi gardenlen, Unless you do have a specific need for a Crocanna I very much doubt if you would want some. Genetically they are reported to be a Hybrid which was the result of the crossing of an estuarine crocodile with an eastern goanna. They have the killing instincts of both creatures and combine the size and power of the croc with the speed and claws of a goanna thus enabling them to run up trees and seemingly disappear. Very dangerous creatures if you don't have a good supply of live Yowies to feed them on. ATB teddy,J

Hi Gardenlen, Crocannas mythical? No I don't think so. I first heard about them on 'Australia All Over' when one reportedly escaped (was illegally released?) a few years back. People were phoning in from many places in the bush reporting sightings. The last report I heard was of an adult crocanna overtaking vehicles travelling South from Broom WA. at speeds in excess of 160kph being persued by an irate shot gun carrying farmer in a Ferrari. It seems the crocanna had eaten his wife and children because it was hungry and they had run out of yowies. From memory these reports were around the first day in April a few years back. Gardenlen I guess a description should cover how to identify them. Picture a Heavily built Goanna 5 mtrs long running very rapidly on its rear legs with forelegs out in front flapping wildly. Thanks for your input, but my problem remains unresolved. In fact, the situation has escalated alarmingly. I appreciate your discussions on both the implications of inter-species hybrids and the effects of alcohol on horticulture - but, the truth be known, the yowies are running amok on my property. What can I do ? Just recently an inland variety has moved into the established group in significant numbers swelling their number to about thirty to forty adults. The infants are difficult to count as they are rather shy and tend to reside with individuals other than their parents. Anyway, the Iceberg roses are almost completely dessimated and the yowies are damaging areas of garden closer to the house. They seem to like the coloured glass mulch I have around the golden diosma and apparently have developed a primitive monetary systenm based on the glass gravel for no obvious reason. I am really worried. Any constructive advice is considered.

I would emmigrate to queensland and leave the yowies to play with their friends in NSW. Like rabbits, Yowies are not allowed in Queensland so there aren't any here. LOL teddy,J

Hi All, seems you need to call on some good ole USA gadgets, don't know if they work but saw some of them at that much mentioned harware shop with conections to the US they start from $50 upwards, The sprinkler with a sensor light switch looked good but where do you get the water from to drive it?? Another good remedy is Stones Green Ginger Wine, you could leave them some out for them, they might like it and when they get sozzled and next morning you can go pick them up for D&D in your garden.We use it for snake bite reppellant in winter when we go fishing and it keeps away Yowies as well,I know it works because I haven't been bitten by a snake or seen a yowie while fishing just thought I'd add that this method has worked for many years and is a proven method. It comes in convienient 4 litre bottles and can be diluted in many different number of forms, I like to use it with xxxx as this adds to the reppellant qualities and lasts for hours and you don't have to use as much valuable xxxx so you can stay out fishing for longer periods, sorry thats um gardening, hang on which foRUM am I in again? is this the FishingNet ooor thheee Gardeennnnwebbbb

dnnaa, I would suggest that you resort to mowing spirals in your lawn, and put up a one-way sign, point in the direction of the centre. The yowies will head into the centre of the spiral and get stuck in the middle. From there you can simply relocate them to your neighbour's rose garden so that they will leave yours alone.

What a brilliant idea Liatris. I wonder if that would work for Heffalumps too. I have been using very expensive Tigger poo scattered around my lawn to keep the Heffalumps out. So far it has worked as we have never ever seen a Heffalump in our garden. ATB teddy,J

up until now I allways thought gardening was a realativly safe hobby , but after reading about some of the things you blokes have to put up with I will have to think long & hard about continuing with it. I know one thing I will not be going outside at night anymore, one never knows what could be lurking in the bottom corner under the mullberry tree, another thing when I do any spraying I will be using a triple face mask as there could be something in the spray we are using.

We are lucky in the West, we have a breed of eleducks. They have a built in vaccuum hose in the front for picking up snails and herbivorus material and are capable of fertilizing 25sq metres in a single hit. They are best kept away from your wacky-baccy crops...

I recommend "Bunyips R Us". Get two monsters of different breeds together and they don't know where to begin. They usually end up by going off in different directions, temporarily confused, thinking they're in the wrong territory.

Well, I would get rid of all the glass gravel for a start. After all who thought that was a good idea anyway? If you ruin the basis for their economic system, they may well move on.
I was hesitant to tell you this, but, in Yowie culture it is considered extremely unlucky to live near a Kombi van. If you could possibly procure one of these to place on your property, I'm sure you would find the population would diminish substantially, or even move on totally. I tell you this from personal experience, it is not an urban myth! I still have the Kombi and have no Yowies.

well as we hadn't heard any more plaintive cries for help from 'dnnaa' we assumed on of the afore mentioned remedies must ahve worked, my guess is the rum with port chasers did the trick hey chuckle?

len now moved out of goadile and ummm yowie country, back in the burb's where the only yowies are mindless things driving commode-dore's/dunny-dores/common-hores, mmm reckon i'd feel safer with the yowies somehow, at least no known harrasment or fatalities from them.
