At my previous home we put in a kidney shaped pond for some intrest - it was 5 feet deep - 15 ft across from top to bottom - this way you can keep fish here all year long. when digging leave the sides smaller so you can "carve" out a shelf ( we had two ) at about 2 ft and 3 1/2 feet. you can carve out shelves but once you get subsoil out it is hard to put it back and keep it where you want it. the shelves don't need to encircle the entire pond but to grow different kinds of plants you need the difference in heights. we put carpet scraps on the bottom and on the shelves - purchased the rubber roofing ( they use it for flat roofs ) it is about 1/10 the $$ of pond liner and works just as well. I never had a problem with the fish or plants. I bought shubinkins - I think that is how to spell it - fancy gold fish really only 5 - the will grow to fit the size of the pond. within a year we had alot more. we used a small pond pump - it recirculated the water from the bottom of pond around to the waterfall ( made with the rocks from the yard and those we found" ) I tried a bubblers and fountians but the waterfall was all I needed. we bought limestone edging to keep the grass from moving in. The only real problems were from the herons and racoons who took to eating my fish.

hahaha, some good comments here I will share with my friends ;) The goldfish and Koi actually love to hide under the floating barges when he is TIED UP TO SHORE ;) Christine, you build that treehouse I will come over ! :) When I was a kid my dad built me a treehouse in the only tree we had that would work for it. I loved it and went up there all the time, within 2 weeks a tornado came thru and knocked down the tree and the walls to my dads garage we had just started to build.. it was sure peaceful up there...

This is an older thread and I hope the fish are healed by now. We had a koi pond with bullheads in it. Red sores are usually bacterial infections and not fungal. But fungus can attach later. My guess is that the bullheads who like to stay on the bottom of the pond are exposed to more pond debris. We put in a bottom drain attached to a filter pond to keep the pond floor clean and keep the water circulated. We also did not keep rocks in the pond because it was too hard to keep clean when the debris collected under it. For the new house my hubby will not let me put in another pond because he had to fill the old one in when we sold our house. Nobody would buy it wilh a large Koi pond in the backyard. :(
