It isn't ugly - it's just not finished yet! It's really cute - has so much potential - nice front porch that can be a great focal point, as your front entry should be. The compost should help the soil a lot; I was advised to also add gypsum, which is supposed to cause the fine clay particles to clump together. It is hard to advise on specific ideas, since that is so much a matter of taste and many other variables. I'd maybe get some of those "bones" in - something to soften the edges of the house - and those bulbs for color ... but I'd take this winter to read and look at lots of books, magazines, other homes in the area. Are there any botanical gardens nearby you can visit? At first so much information might be confusing, but eventually, as you develop and refine your vision for your site, most extraneous stuff will drop away, and it will all begin to come together. You'll want to think of how you plan to view and use that space ... just to look pretty (from inside as well as outside) or will you be spending time out there? Do you want to incorporate a lawn seating area? Cutting garden? Potager? Rose garden? (You certainly seem to have plenty of sun!) How about attracting & supporting birds/butterflies/beneficial insects? Are there deer (or other animals) nearby that would nibble your plants? What about things like birdbaths, sundials, arbors, and such? There are plenty of landscape design software programs; if you're so inclined, you could play around with that this winter, too. And, whatever you do, it isn't cast in stone! With few exceptions, plants can be moved without harm, as long as you time it right and treat them well. Some of the things we do have to be done right the first time ... I don't consider gardening in that category (maybe with the exception of good soil preparation); perhaps that's why it's so relaxing and enjoyable. I'd be a sorry woman, indeed, if my gardens were "complete" and "perfect" and there wasn't a single plant left I'd like to add. For example, right now. late winter- Helleborus orientalis blooming, in shades of purple and pink, and it self-sows. Pulmonaria starting to bloom, variegated foliage, colors from white, pink, rose, cobalt blue/pink, purple/orange, needs some shade and light summer water P. 'Excalibur' Early daffodils starting Muscari Snowdrops- Galium Spring- Daffodils Species tulips- tougher than hybrid tulips, smaller blooms Muscari Hyacinths Pulmonaria Anemone nemarosa- delightful patches of low foliage and myriad blooms, goes dormant in the dry season Hardy geraniums, G. Sanguinum makes clumps that look like bouquets, some trail, low water usage Bleeding hearts Perennial forget-me-nots, Brunnera, can self sow a little, need some shade, medium water usage. Biennials, which do great here since they grow during the rainy season and bloom before things dry out for summer- Lunaria- silver dollar plant, purple or white flowers, heart-shaped leaves, makes lovely dried arrangements, self-sows Forget-me-nots, blue/pink flowers, look great initially, but can sow invasively and have to be pulled out, I tolerate them but they look bad at end of season Columbines- can be grown from seed, self-sow, cute grey-green foliage, tall double I have looks like fairyland when blooming in beds, a chore to cut all the flower spikes off later when dry. Daphne odora, where drainage is very good, shade Irises- succession of bloom from dwarf to tall bearded to Siberian and Japanese Summer- Hardy Fuchsias- tougher ones have small flowers, like 'David' F. 'Edith' with some surrounding Columbine foliage Hardy geraniums G. 'Anne Thompson' Roses- check out rose forum, rosesant forum Phygelius, Cape Fuchsia, tall almost shrubby, tubular flowers that hummingbirds like Runner beans- have red flowers that hummingbirds like, do better than regular pole beans in our cooler summers, eat when not too big as they get fibrous Heucheras- many with lovely foliage, some with nice red flowers, low to average water usage. Hypericum frondosum, kalmianum- yellow flowers, low water usage, nice fall color, shrubby Hebes- check for hardiness, smaller leaves usually, nice rounded mounding plants Hebe pinguifolia 'Sutherlandii' Daphne "Summer Ice", long bloom, nice round shrub, low water, good drainage Heathers- some bloom in winter, various seasons, low mounds, low water usage Thyme- great on slopes, low water usage, flowers, culinary Variegated Marjoram- " Oregano- " Dwarf Greek Oregano is low, some can 2-3' Rosemary- " 3-5' Dahlias- can succeed left in the ground but do better lifted. Malvaceae- edible leaves, Rose of Sharon, Hollyhocks, Hardy hibiscus, etc. Sarcococca hookeriana 'Humillis'- very fragrant flowers, I don't quite remember when it blooms Favorite ground covers- Arctostaphylos uva-ursi, esp Massachusetts Symphytum grandiflorum- Ground cover comfrey, good in dry shade, banks, under trees in orchard, tougher than grass and weeds Geranium macrorrhizum- dry shade, banks Epimedium- choice for shade Vinca- major can be very invasive, taller; minor is low, variegated forms not as invasive and can light up dry shade, low water usage. Ceanothus gloriosa 'Point Reyes'- low, spreading, low water usage, blooms Campanula poscharskyana- trailing, heart-shaped leaves, blue flowers, fills in well in shade Well, just a smattering of things that have done well for me. I use tunnels to set out tomatoes, squash and cucumber early, and grow peppers in pots. It's not warm enough for melons, basically, though some try. I've seen large Moon and Stars watermelons at Fort Vancouver. Beans usually do very well, and greens like collards and kale, which can overwinter as well as turnips for early spring greens, if planted by July 15.

Just got back from a fantastic trip to the UK. We saw 11 gardens (which of course wasn't nearly enough). Didn't see many that we planned on but saw others that came our way. We spent 6 days in No. Wales and went to Powis Castle, Bodnant and Penhryn Castle. All wonderfully different. Bodnant was unbelieveable! I took Greenplants's advice and visited Vann Hambledon which was great. The entrance is certainly deceiving. Great sculptures enhance the playful design. Also visited two other "Gardens for Chairty" Hammerwood House near Chitford which was a parklike estate garden with wonderful rhodies and a magnificent setting (immaculately maintained). And the Malt House near Ipping which is a delightful plantsperson's garden with lots of Rhodies and unusual perennials and a beautiful Tudor House. West Dean Garden was a real treat and a real surprise. Photo's I'd seen just don't do this place justice as they over emphasize the walled garden and forget about the arboretum, woodland and formal elements. This is a grand garden! Exbury was the first garden we visited and was a delightful woodland garden and a joy for any Rhododendron and Azalea lover. We also visited Furzey nearby which is a smaller woodland garden. Two National Trust properties near where we were staying were Uppark (not noted for it's garden but has a nice one with a lovely Handkerchief tree in full bloom) and Hinton Ampner whose topiaries and formal beds with tulips were quite enchanting. What struck me most about this our first to the UK is how there are little gardens just about everywhere. In the small village where we stayed (South Harting) cottage and container gardens abound. I would recommend joing the Royal Oak Foundation only available to US residents ($75.00 for a family) https://www.royal-oak.org for free entrance to the National Trust Properties. I would also recommend the Gardens Open for Charity http://www.ngs.org.uk/ and perhaps one of the nicest websites for gardens (check the link for the Garden Finder) http://www.ngs.org.uk/. Although the weather was rainy the bluebells, Rhodies and Azaleas were perfect and many places the tulips were gorgeous. As we left the hybrid Clematis were following on the heels of many species that were in bloom. Wisteria and Laburnum were blooming and many viburnums and early bedding plants.
