My beans are going yellow!

Hi there, just a quick question regarding my dwarf green beans. I planted them as seedlings two weeks ago(they were bought in the punnet) but they appear to have turned a little yellow. Two of them have dark brown streaks on the stems but all the plants seem more yellow than green. Should I worry about this? This is my first attempt at a veggie patch so I'm still learning. They also have small black flying insects on them - I assume they are aphids?

Not familiar with that. Yellowing can be caused by something as simple as overwatering or perhaps a missing nutrient, like Nitrogen. If it's too much water, just ease back. I'd apply a good organic fertiliser (I like combining fish emulsion with seaweed extract) along with some Sulphate of Potash sprinkled around the plants, whatever the problem.
If you suspect that the brown markings represent disease, remove the offending plants and burn them.

Don't know where in NSW you are, but beans aren't fond of cold soil. Regardless, they do love a bit of potash. Try about a matchboxful for each plant before watering and scratch it in gently without disturbing the roots.

Search for Mexican bean beetles. If they are the culprits who caused that amount of damage, they will be easy to find. The adults look exactly like a lady bug but are drabber in color, more brown or orange than lady bugs. Little yellow eggs can be found in groups on the underside of bean leaves. Larva are spiny creatures about the size of the adults, also on the underside of leaves. Large infestations can do a lot of damage. Rotenone or Sevin are effective. Mice will eat favas and peas (and I assume other beans) but I find they only eat them after they have begun to germinate. They eat the bean and toss the sprout aside. I get around it by laying small hole chicken wire very flat over the ground held down with stones so the mice cant get under it. Seems to work. This year I tried a new trick. I laid a lot of rosemary cuttings all along the pea row as soon as I sowed them This year none have been eaten, the pigeons haven't taken them and the pea and bean weevil hasn't notched the edges. Maybe coincidence but I am certainly going to do it again next year.

When you say that this is 'a true raised planter bed', am I correct in understanding that this is like a table filled with growing medium? If so, I think the problem might be how you consider the style of gardening. In essence, you are growing in a very large container. It's perfectly fine, it just needs to be treated like a container garden. Even if it's just a high raised bed, with the drainage you have, combined with the medium you used, I would switch to a soluble fertilizer. Since everything you describe is organic, try to find a product like fish emulsion (there are many others.) The problem with the fertilizer you seem to describe, is that most 'organic fertilizers' are formulated to work in concert with inground soil organisms. You are above the ground, so your fertilizer isn't releasing. A complete (all nutrients, not just NPK) soluble fertilizer of your preference should correct the problems you're seeing. You'll want to use the fertilizer as needed, but many container gardeners find that feeding once a week, or once every 2 weeks - as the label recommends - is a good schedule. That may require adjusting, and you'll just need to watch the plants and see how they respond.

I'm on the mid north coast (Coffs area) so I don't think cold soil is the prob as it's been quite warm since I've planted the seedlings. Could be overwatering tho'! How often should I water my veggies??? I've been doing it daily. It has a good cover of mulch so maybe I have been over watering. I have lettuce near the beans so have been trying to keep the water up to these.

Let the veggies determine their water needs. Wilting during the day is quite normal and is okay. They should recover fairly quickly when the sun goes off them, especially since they're mulched. If they're still wilting next morning, they need water. The only exception I'd make is lettuce. If the water's not kept up to them, they can get bitter.

Yep. Daily sounds like too much, 'specially with mulch. You can always poke a finger down through the mulch to find out what's happening down there.
