I have the same vine and mine is growing on an archway. All the information I have read has said to prune lightly after flowering. Because mine is in such a restricted situation I prune it heavily after flowering (and sometimes a bit more in between) otherwise we won't be able to get through! It is thriving. So I don't think they are too picky about it all.

A very timely question. Mine is on an arch, and has a very bare bottom and is growing uncontrollably into my trees. I'm thinking of taking it right back to within an inch of it's life (or about 30 cm whichever comes first). It's pretty ugly and useless as it is (bit too shady I suspect). Should I chop it now? - it doesn't seem to flower much (or ever really) or wait till after the cooler weather?

If you're not happy with it the way it is, why not give it a try? The worst that can happen is that it dies and you get to plant something new and more suited to the spot. I've actually just pruned mine very hard. I know it's a bit late, but hey! lets live dangerously! LOL! The other option is to just make the hard decision and get rid of it. If it doesn't flower, what is the point of having it?

I had a couple of these on archways in my house in Melb and used to hack them back savagely at least twice a year, but they grew rampantly. As long as you don't prune them after the flower buds appear , they'll flower just fine.

2 years ago I moved to a 100 acre bush block in Mudgee, and what I thought from a distance were blackberries, turned out to be Pandorea pandorana....they literally climb 20 metre trees and eventually kill them. I reckon I'd have 1000 individual vines here.....
A very rampant (but beautiful) vine that can take the most brutal pruning!

Thanks Dee, I've started hacking away at mine. Now I've started I'm looking forward to decimating them.

Since posting my original pruning query, I have read an article by Paddy Lightfoot, about native vines, in the newsletter of the APS of NSW. Due to their rampant growth, Paddy lists the Pandoreas, pandorana and jasminoides, as two of the planting mistakes they've made at the Wetlands Centre in Newcastle. Makes me wonder if I really want these plants at all!

It may be a matter of climate and/or position. I find with the major annual chop and trims in between times it really wouldn't be able to get out of hand. Mind you mine doesn't have a tree handy to grab onto and reach for the stars!! I could imagine this would complicate matters somewhat. Even on a fence if you can't get to the other side. I guess that's the beauty of mine being on an arch...it's all pretty accessible.
Glad to see you've taken the attack approach Amelie. It seems to be the only way!
