Use of Confidor

I have a case of curl grub in my garden and they have invaded a potted plant or two. I have brought some hose on confidor for this problem. Has anyone used this product by applying with a watering can (to potted plants)? If so what dilution rate was used - watering can is 9L. Will it knock the plant around futher?

I think this might be overkill?
I checked on the web, the dosage for the spray-on Confidor for lawns and it says 500ml treats 150m2. That involves a considerable break-down for a pot.
But also if it is similar to the working of other lawn grub killers (I don't know if it is) it may rely on the grubs coming up closer to the surface to feed.
Whereas I know sometimes I get infestations of curl grubs they can be anywhere in the pot. So you would have to actually drench the pot and I don;t know what damage that might do to a plant. I know Confidor is pretty safe to use if handled carefully except round bees, but then the product is meant for grassed areas.
Could you not just re-pot the plants and shake the grubs out in the process? Then apply something like seasol just to reduce shock?
Or maybe drench the pots & then apply a very weak solution of potasium permanganate (condy's crystals" it gets worms and cut-worms leaving the pot mighty fast.
But failing that, I would try to contact the manufacturer direct and see what they recommend for Confidor use

Last time I checked the rate was on the label for soil drenching plants.
Confidor is 4 times more systemic by soil drenching than spraying

I'd go for either Method 1 or 2 mentioned by Adrian. Washing and repotting might reduce the numbers but it probably wont get rid of them all and the problem is likely to return in a few weeks. All pesticides aren't equal and some can harm carnivorous plants. IME most of the organophosphates on the market are suitable although they can be toxic to the user and may be overkill for thrips. Supposedly the wetting agents can damage plants. I've used commercial liquid preps of malathion and dimethoate (Rogor) without problem. I grow outside so the effects of the wetting agents may be more prevalent in enclosed spaces like terrariums. Pyrethrum is good. Some people have reported damage using commercial preps, although I know plenty of people who use commercial preps without issue. I use home brewed pyrethrum without problem so it may be an issue with whatever else they add to commercial preps. I've used Imidacloprid (Confidor) without problem although some growers have recorded damage from this insecticide. Insecticidal soaps can be quite toxic to carnivorous plants. Oils can also be a problem (probably clog the leaves up).

Thanks very much Gardengal48. Last year I had a HUGE infestation of white flies which I caught too late; this year they have started up again along with the appearance of scales (I live on the Meditterranean, so it gets warm early) ; I will use Confidor to kill the current white flies and (hopefully) avoid any more. According to what I have read and been told, Confidor only needs to be used once a season, and the earlier it is used, the more effective. I realize that it is not ideal, but our resources are limited here and i am hoping that by only using it in a limited manner it will be effective but not too damaging to the natural balance. Michael with a lot of patience you can clean off a lot of scale if they are nice specimens -I use a bamboo skewer and just scrape them off lightly and then hose. Doing the underside of the leaves is probably of more use as that is harder to reach with sprays and probably a breeding ground. I've been trialling David Gray's systemic granules mixed into potting mix when I re-do them. Pretty toxic stuff though handle most carefully with gloves and a mask. (To steal someone else's line, if it can kill scale it can kill you.) Air circulation helps but really the ants can be a major problem in spreading this stuff. A bit of perseverance and you may well lick the problem forever and save the adults. Isolate the worst ones and they may well make more pups. Some Neos, some Aechmea and some Billgergias seem magnets, seems no problems with most Tills (even the ground ones) Vriesia or Nidularum. The fact that you have identified the problem early is half the battle won, I think. Good luck

Go Confidor.You will need to spray each time an outbreak occurs but but material safety data sheets suggest practically non-toxic.Our experience is 100% kill every time.Disyston and confidor also control thrips (or at least non-resistant ones).Talking of ladybirds we had some black aphids on our roses ealier in Spring which we don't normally have problems with.They had plainly jumped off some nearby weeds.As their numbers weren't escalating too badly I held off spraying.After a short period the ladybirds arrived and thoroughly cleaned them up, right to the last one.We're not normally this lucky though. The problem with confidor is that it also kills many ofthe beneficial insects within soil and plant environment. This makes the area more prone to return problems, and other issues.
Try finding a more natural solution.
Beneficial nematodes are very effective for curl grub control, and are environmentally friendly.
