Use of Confidor

I have a case of curl grub in my garden and they have invaded a potted plant or two. I have brought some hose on confidor for this problem. Has anyone used this product by applying with a watering can (to potted plants)? If so what dilution rate was used - watering can is 9L. Will it knock the plant around futher?

I think this might be overkill?
I checked on the web, the dosage for the spray-on Confidor for lawns and it says 500ml treats 150m2. That involves a considerable break-down for a pot.
But also if it is similar to the working of other lawn grub killers (I don't know if it is) it may rely on the grubs coming up closer to the surface to feed.
Whereas I know sometimes I get infestations of curl grubs they can be anywhere in the pot. So you would have to actually drench the pot and I don;t know what damage that might do to a plant. I know Confidor is pretty safe to use if handled carefully except round bees, but then the product is meant for grassed areas.
Could you not just re-pot the plants and shake the grubs out in the process? Then apply something like seasol just to reduce shock?
Or maybe drench the pots & then apply a very weak solution of potasium permanganate (condy's crystals" it gets worms and cut-worms leaving the pot mighty fast.
But failing that, I would try to contact the manufacturer direct and see what they recommend for Confidor use

Last time I checked the rate was on the label for soil drenching plants.
Confidor is 4 times more systemic by soil drenching than spraying

Great thank you Lynn! I have been after that name for ages, but no one knew of it. I suffered badly from a collection wide scale attack when my bromeliad-addiction-to-get-one-of-everything kicked in and had to squash them all intogether - too closely. But I also built more space and now spread them out, well better than they were. I had to pull out the big guns initially and spray all with Rogor. I have done it three times over 2 years, and am now 99.9% free. But I do not want to use Rogor anymore. It is too harsh on bees and other good critters. I use Clensel now (MUCH more enviro friendly) on any new plants I bring into my collection. And I may use a few granules of this stuff when potting offsets in future. It's the variegated Neos that mostly suffer in my collection and Ae chantinii - well they are a scale magnet in my area. Neo carcharodon hybrids are fine as are Vriesea - well for me, and thank goodness for that! Thanks again Lynn.

Hi Nev, Re vinegar in bromeliad cups, I haven't seen anything definitive on this, but I could offer the following thoughts. The effectiveness of the chemical mechanics that plants use to absorb nutrients are often strongly affected by pH. Something like Ae. fasciata would be adapted to be good at absorbing nutrients from its cup full of decomposing leaf litter, which would have a pH that is quite acidic. Vinegar is strongly acidic, so putting some in the cup of the plant would put the pH in the acidic range, which would help the plant to be as good as possible at absorbing any nutrients that are also in there. Maybe the malt residues in brown malt vinegar could also provide some nutrition directly, but I wouldn't mind betting that the main effect would be via pH, and this could be a big effect, especially if the water supply has been made quite alkaline by the water supply authorities, as is often the case. Like mine is. Hey, I'm getting a bottle of brown malt vinegar on the way home from work tonight and that fluting variegated fasciata of mine is getting a dose! Thanks for a great idea. Cheers, Paul

Thanks very much Gardengal48. Last year I had a HUGE infestation of white flies which I caught too late; this year they have started up again along with the appearance of scales (I live on the Meditterranean, so it gets warm early) ; I will use Confidor to kill the current white flies and (hopefully) avoid any more. According to what I have read and been told, Confidor only needs to be used once a season, and the earlier it is used, the more effective. I realize that it is not ideal, but our resources are limited here and i am hoping that by only using it in a limited manner it will be effective but not too damaging to the natural balance. Hey, surfboy Confidor appears to be harmless to cacti in any of it's forms. I use the aerosol, but keep it a fair way from the plant. Spray bottle is probably better. I like to completely dunk my plants every couple of months and that would be the best time to do it. Fof

The problem with confidor is that it also kills many ofthe beneficial insects within soil and plant environment. This makes the area more prone to return problems, and other issues.
Try finding a more natural solution.
Beneficial nematodes are very effective for curl grub control, and are environmentally friendly.
